Big Wave International transformed the north end of Union Square Park into a Rollerblade rink for Rock 'N Rollerblade 2001, an annual event where Rollerbladers of all ages enjoyed the opportunity to zip around in circles to a soundtrack of music provided by event co-sponsor KTU 103.5. Big Wave constructed a steel pipe frame stage surrounded by barricades for the participants to skate in without endangering pedestrians.
Rollerblade outfitted all participants with skate rentals and all the protective gear they'd allow, including helmets, elbow and knee pads and wrist guards. Co-sponsored by The New York Post, JetBlue Airways and City of New York Parks & Recreation, the event allowed hundreds of members of the public to enjoy a beautiful night of skating and music free of charge.
