Milk and cookies at home, or ice cream floats and a Parisienne ham and cheese sandwich at the Carlyle? It's a dilemma that now confronts Upper East Side parents, because starting this month, the storied hotel is hosting a Madeline-themed teatime for kids every weekday afternoon.
The hotel teamed up with Lucy Sykes to hold a tea that also launched the socialite’s new clothing line for babies and toddlers. Nike Communications, the hotel's PR agency, planned the event, which hosted about 100 parents and children inside Bemelmans Bar—where Madeline author Ludwig Bemelmans painted murals to pay off his 18-month hotel tab in 1947. "Eloise is on hiatus now that the Plaza's closed, so it was the perfect time to launch this," said Nike's Amanda Miller. The agency decorated the bar with colorful balloons, and brought in a storyteller dressed as Madeline, and a pianist with a black beret and black and white striped shirt. Traditional, three-tiered serving platters topped with ham sandwiches and Madeline cookies accompanied heavy-duty teacups and saucers for little hands. Sykes hosted a trunk show inside one of the suites upstairs.
