Taking advantage of Sunday's unusually balmy weather, Sabra Go Mediterranean—the Astoria-based hummus manufacturer—spread out at the south end of Union Square for its "make your own hummus Sunday" promotion. Designed to educate consumers on the healthy Mediterranean diet (and test out some of the company's newest flavors), the event served free hummus samples sprinkled with fresh toppings from customized ice cream carts. (Get it—hummus Sunday/hummus sundae?)While this promotion didn't have Fabio, it did have a calm scene composed of potted palm trees, music, a fountain, and tables and chairs set up on a beach-themed area of the open plaza, as well as an on-site nutritionist from food-issues think tank Oldways. Based on the response from this event—the company served 2,500 cups of custom-topped hummus and handed out an additional 6,000 mini containers of hummus—Sabra reps say they may take the carts to other cities.
