Your audiovisual supplier lists a 6,000 lumens projector in their proposal for your event. Is that enough, or is it overkill? Wouldn’t it be helpful to see a 6,000 lumens projector running side by side with a 2,000 lumens one, so you can observe the differences?

The Event Leadership Institute is launching a series of hands-on, experiential Learning Labs on Technical Meeting & Event Production in several cities this summer, designed to empower planners to be more educated customers of audiovisual services.

Programs will be either a single full day or two half days on site at a local production company’s studio, and will include hands-on exercises led by industry leaders where participants can learn the pros and cons of using different types of microphones, lighting techniques, projection technology, slide presentation, and other tools.

“Most events, and practically all meetings, utilize some form of audiovisual and lighting technology, and yet this is still one area where the average planner really doesn’t know what they’re buying,” said E.L.I. founder and executive director Howard Givner. “We’re on a mission to change that.”

Learning Labs will take place on July 27 in New York City led by Matthew Saravay of Wizard Studios; on August 2 in Chicago led by Brandt Krueger at Event Creative; on August 4 in Washington led by Ajay Patil and Blayne Candy of Showcall; and on August 16 and 17 in Edmonton, Alberta, in Canada, led by Brent Taylor of Event Technology Solutions.

“We like working with educated clients,” said Saravay, C.E.O. of Wizard Studios, who will be leading the NYC Learning Lab at the Wizard production facility in Brooklyn. “I’m excited to help planners see and hear the effects of utilizing different gear and techniques, for example, and empower them to know what inputs and outputs they need for audio and visual display. All of this is very teachable and will make planners be far more valuable in their jobs.”

Registration for the in-person Learning Labs will include access to E.L.I.’s five-week online Technical Meeting & Event Production course, which participants can complete at their own pace over the summer, with an opportunity to earn a Digital Credential upon passing a final exam.

This is the second professional development course that E.L.I. is offering in a hybrid model that combines online and in-person education experiences.
