On October 7, the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation hosted a fund-raiser that used a unique method to gather donations. Dubbed the "Celebrity Pool Toss," the 23-year-old event let guests bid on tossing local celebrities and business leaders into the pool of the Phoenix Hotel. The evening's highest bid was $45,000, which one guest donated to toss Related California Rentals' executive vice president, Susan Smartt, into the water. Overall, the superhero-theme function raised $355,000 to serve San Francisco's lowest-income neighborhood.
