1. LAS VEGAS IS TOP TRADE SHOW DESTINATION: For the 20th consecutive year, Las Vegas won the title of top trade show destination, hosting 53 of the largest trade shows. Other top cities include Chicago, with 29 top shows, and Orlando, with 24, according to Trade Show News Network. Las Vegas Sun: “All totaled in 2013 … Las Vegas played host to more than 22,000 meetings that attracted more than 5.1 million delegates. Those meetings had a $7.4 billion impact on the Southern Nevada economy and supported 61,200 jobs.”

2. HEADLINER CANCELS AT ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL: The DJ Avicii dropped out of Miami’s Ultra Music Festival this weekend because of health reasons. The DJ was the key to a promotion at SLS South Beach, which dubbed itself “Avicii Hotel at SLS.” Deadmau5 took over for him on the main stage. MTV: “The Swedish DJ, born Tim Bergling, was rushed to a Miami Beach hospital on Thursday for abdominal pains, nausea and fever, and was later diagnosed with a blocked gall bladder. His rep said he is ‘currently being evaluated for a potential surgery to remove his gall bladder.’”

3. ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVALS ATTRACT MAJOR SPONSORS: SFX Entertainment told investors that it is drawing more corporate sponsorships to its electronic music festivals, which include Tomorrowland, Electric Zoo, Rock in Rio, and Sensation. The New York Times: “Since SFX was formed, sponsorships and media have been critical to its plan to make money from the wide but largely diffuse dance audience, which is spread around the world and might come together only for occasional events. SFX’s recent deals include a sponsorship with Anheuser-Busch InBev and a partnership with the radio giant Clear Channel Communications that includes a D.J. talent search and a syndicated weekly radio show under the brand of Beatport, an online music store and digital platform owned by SFX. In a statement, the company said that sponsorships had already contributed more than $40 million in earnings in the first three months of this year and that more such deals were coming.”
