The 35th incarnation of Miami Dade College’s Miami Film Festival festival snagged a new lead sponsor in MoviePass, a movie theater subscription service. It also honored actress Isabelle Huppert with its Gem–Icon Award and a screening of the film Souvenir. The event—first known as the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival when it launched in 1998, before joining forces with its Fort Lauderdale counterpart in 2015 as the MiFo L.G.B.T. Film Festival—has rebranded as Outshine. The 20th annual Miami edition leads the festivities in April, taking over Regal Cinemas South Beach and the Scottish Rite near Downtown Miami. The 10th Annual Fort Lauderdale Edition arrives in the fall at the Classic Gateway Theatre, Savor Cinema, and the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale. Next: April 20-29, 2018

The three-day conference is one of three Festival of Media events across the globe: The Miami edition brings together more than 1,200 representatives from a directory of Latin American media and entertainment entities. The event takes place at Aventura’s Turnberry Isle, bringing more than 300 brands and 55 speakers. In January, nearly 5,000 media executives and 200 speakers from more than 70 countries converged on the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc in Miami Beach for the three-day Natpe market and conference. Tony Vinciquerra, chairman and C.E.O. of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and television host and journalist Soledad O’Brien headlined the midweek keynote, A Changing Industry in a Changing World. The ninth annual Hispanicize, held at the JW Marriott Marquis, will bring together 3,000 Latino media professionals, content creators, tech innovators, thought leaders, entrepreneurs, and digital disruptors. This year presenting sponsor Prudential will host Facebook Live sessions prior to the conference, and Wells Fargo is planning its own pre-event Twitter parties that warm up participants for its “perfect pitch” presentation. The 22nd annual American Black Film Festival is back in Miami, supporting and celebrating talent in front of and behind the camera. Programming for 2018 will be backed by HBO, Comcast NBCUniversal, Turner, and TV One, among others. The workshops include opportunities for hosts, comedians, screenwriters, showrunners, and producers while also premiering pilots, television programs, and films. The Miami Short Film Festival is dedicated to promoting the short film genre, showcasing films from one to 20 minutes long. The festival is international in scope, bringing exposure to independent and up-and-coming filmmakers and luring upwards of 2,500 patrons. Polaroid Sunglasses sponsored the 2017 edition, which awarded the best in class for documentary, narrative, experimental, and animation, among others. Next: November 8-11, 2018

Recent Cinema from Spain, an exhibition series presenting Spain’s best current films, enters its eighth year in Miami in 2018. Held at the Olympia Theater, the series draws upwards of 4,000 attendees over its four-days. Many of the screened films are making their stateside debuts, which adds to the festival’s buzz. Last year’s edition featured appearances by Spanish actors Carlos Santos and Javier Pereira, filmmaker Pablo Berger, and TV host Boris Izaguirre. Next: November 8-11, 2018

The festival celebrated its 21st anniversary in September and connected Miami-Dade County with Broward County via parallel screenings across four venues: New World Symphony’s Soundscape Park, Savor Cinema, Regal South Beach, and the Miami Beach Cinematheque. The closing-night Crystal Lens Awards featured a screening of 2016 film Elis, by Hugo Prata: The biopic chronicles the life of Elis Regina, considered to be Brazil’s top vocalist of all time. More than 60,000 people turned out for the Food Network & Cooking Channel’s South Beach Wine & Food Festival, which took place from February 21 to 25. Now in its 17th year, attendees took in flagship beach events like the Grand Tasting Village while also delving deeper into happenings in Fort Lauderdale. Highlights included the Art of Tiki Cocktail Showdown with Anne Burrell, Walshy Fire’s Rum & Bass Beach Party, and Harlem to Overtown Jazz Brunch with chef Marcus Samuelsson. The festival raises money for the Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management at Florida International University. Next: February 20-24, 2019

Few events have the fund-raising power that the multilayered Naples Winter Wine & Food Festival puts forth every year, self-proclaimed as the most successful international charity wine auction in the world. The 2018 edition—the event’s 18th incarnation—raised nearly $15.3 million to aid children's programs and initiatives throughout southwest Florida. The event featured 18 all-star chefs from across the globe, more than 30 vintners, and 17 of only 236 Master Sommeliers in the world. The auction featured more than 60 items and experiences. Formerly the Delray Beach Garlic Festival, the food festival has embraced its new home at John Prince Park in Lake Worth. With its 19th year behind them, the three-day South Florida Garlic Festival has become so popular, the Cooking Channel’s “Carnival Eats” plans to feature it on its sixth season this spring. Hoobastank and Stephen Marley headlined the music acts while more than 30,000 people sampled uniquely stinky eats. Next: February 8-10, 2019

Top Chef alums Jeff McInnis and Janine Booth of Stiltsville Fish Bar and Root & Bone sold out the signature Interactive Dinner for VeritageMiami 2018 inside downtown’s Intercontinental Hotel. In its 22nd year, the multi-day event welcomed back marquee sponsor City National Bank as well as American Airlines and Celebrity Cruises at the Vintner sponsor level. The Bubbly Brunch & Auction and Craft Beer Tasting also sold out. New to this year: Gold Medal-winning wines from the Best In Glass Wine Challenge were featured at the Associate Legal Mingle along with bites from local restaurants. Now entering its 30th edition, Taste of Nation brings together some 35 of South Florida’s top restaurants, as well as standout chefs and mixologists. In 2017, the event raised enough to connect hungry kids in need with approximately 680,000 healthy meals. The Las Olas Wine & Food Festival shuts down Fort Lauderdale’s Las Olas Boulevard to gather 2,000 devoted foodies to its Tasting Pavillion in support of the American Lung Association. Its 23rd year promises “more than 50 of South Florida’s finest restaurants and more than 40 wineries, spirits brands, and breweries.” The festival is presented by Breakthru Beverage, William Hill Winery, New Amsterdam, and Woodford Reserve. The Pompano Beach Seafood Festival features a trio of stages for live music and entertainment, arts and crafts vendors, and of course food vendors offering fresh crawfish, mussels, shrimp, lobster rolls, and more. The Pompano Fishing Pier is currently being reconstructed, so the festival has changed its layout to minimize disruption. Proceeds from the event, now in its 34th year, benefit local charities. Held at the Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach, the Breakers Palm Beach, and a number of other venues, the Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival celebrated its 11th anniversary in 2017. Some 5,000 attendees come for the intimate atmosphere and chance to meet chefs such as Daniel Boulud, Anita Lo, Tony Mantuano, and other notables. The Deering Seafood Festival hosts its 14th edition this year, maintaining its reputation as a family-friendly, tasty, hyperlocal, and homestyle affair. In addition to layers of seafood presented by local top chefs and eateries, a craft beer station, vendors, live music, and kids’ areas, the festival proudly incorporates the neighborhood’s Bahamian influences into its programming. As the popularity of craft beer surges nationwide, the industry’s go-to South Florida event continues to be Grovetoberfest. As the largest craft beer event in Florida by both vendor participation and attendance (more than 5,000 annually), Grovetoberfest 2017 took over Coconut Grove’s Regatta Park despite operational concerns due to Hurricane Irma. The Back to the Future theme edition embraced social media to build word of mouth under the #BackToTheGrove hashtag. The outing featured more than 500 beers and several beer-infused cooking demos. Celebrating plant-based foods, Seed Food & Wine has carved its own space within South Florida’s food festival space. Alongside signature events such as the Plant Based Burger Battle and Tasting Village, the festival presents wellness events, a cruelty-free fashion show, and summit for bloggers and influencers who focus on conscious, sustainable, and vegan living. The biggest festival of flamenco dance and music in the Southeast wrapped its 11th season with the world’s performances by Ballet Nacional de España at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. In December, the Bass Museum of Art hosted its first gala after its $12 million renovation, welcoming over 200 art patrons, philanthropists, and collectors. Chanel presented the soiree, which announced a recent major gift of $500,000 by Riccardo and Tatyana Silva toward the institution’s endowment fund. In its final run at Key Biscayne, the Miami Open will be headlined by 20-time Grand Slam champion and reigning winner Roger Federer, and 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams. South Dade County’s Homestead-Miami Speedway is the site of the Ford EcoBoost, the championship race of the Monster Energy Nascar Cup Series playoffs. Organizers estimate that the event brings in more than $300 million in revenue to the region. Martin Truex Jr. was 2017’s Ford EcoBoost champion. The Honda Classic, a PGA Tour event, broke records in 2018 by attracting 224,642 spectators over seven days spanning from the Monday Pro-Am to Sunday's final round. The numbers represent a 10 percent increase in attendance from 2017. The tournament’s buzziest aspect: The return of Tiger Woods following multiple back surgeries. Next: February 25-March 3, 2019

The Miami Marathon, now featuring title sponsor Fitbit, celebrated its 16th incarnation in January 2018. The popular fitness tracker and technology company signed a three-year deal with the event, marking the first time the races have had a title sponsor. Participants accessed a new app that synced their Fitbit devices to analytics during the race. More than 20,000 runners were at the start line, with more than half of them living outside Miami-Dade County. Participants represented all 50 states along with 80 countries. Next: January 27, 2019

Considered the most important polo tournament in the United States, the U.S. Open Polo Championship is the pinnacle of the 26-goal tournaments held during the 16-week, Florida high-goal winter polo season. An estimated 10,000 people attend the annual competition. In 2017, International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington was awarded the championship through 2021. Now entering its fourth year in Miami Beach as the second leg of the Longines Global Champions Tour—the world’s premier show jumping series—the beachside tournament draws an international slate of competitors who include the best riders in the world. More than $3.4 million were raised during 2018’s Dolphins Cycling Challenge, bringing the sporting events to-date total to over $22.5 million for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The Goo Goo Dolls and Big Head Todd & the Monsters headlined the DCC VII Finish Line Celebration. The 21st annual Miami Heat Family Festival got an extra boost thanks to the return of team star Dwyane Wade. The festival, presented by Carnival Cruise Line at the AmericanAirlines Arena, raised $550,000 for SafeSpace, the Jackson Memorial Foundation’s Guardian Angels, and the Miami Heat Charitable Fund. The carnival-theme celebration featured a food court with eats from more than 50 South Florida restaurants, appearances by DJ Irie, the Miami Heat Dancers, Burnie the mascot, in-arena P.A. announcer Michael B., the Golden Oldies, a silent auction, and more. More than 250 models from 12 agencies participated in the ninth annual edition, which continued to attract nearly 15,000 spectators to South Beach to watch the bracket-style tournament that benefits the Jack Brewer Foundation. Celebrity visitors included Rob Gronkowski, Claudia Romani, Carlos Dunlap, Jeremy Shockey, and Kelly Olynyk, while guests enjoyed complimentary Whispering Angel and skincare treatments. Recognized as the launching pad for many of the swimwear industry’s leading lines and the anchoring event to Miami Swim Week, SwimShow continued its reign as South Florida’s top fashion event in 2017: SwimShow celebrated its 36th anniversary and drew over 3,000 buyers to the Miami Beach Convention Center. Nearly 2,500 labels and lifestyle brands line the center’s walls: Braid bars, nail salons, henna paintings, and massage bars are a just handful of the interactive pop-ups. Held at the W South Beach and nearby satellite tents and produced alongside the Hammock Trade Show, SwimMiami takes place during Miami Swim Week. The collection of runway shows is distinguishing itself by pushing experiential boundaries. In 2017, SwimMiami shows included the debut of Sports Illustrated’s swimwear line and their party, a performance by hip-hop star Wale, and the runway unveiling of social media app Snapchat’s colorful Spectacle sunglasses, which allow for hands-free recording and real-time sharing. Produced by longtime Miami Swim Week participant Funkshion, Swim Fashion Week expanded with a new activewear experience called Retreat Miami. Funkshion’s 2017 large-scale productions included a buzzy lobby lounge that was anchored by Glamour, Peroni, and Alfa Romeo. For 2018, Funkshion will unveil Magic City, billed as “the ultimate destination for the resort, swim, and lifestyle industries.” Next: July 2018

Ice Palace Film Studios was the official home of Miami Fashion Week, which counts Antonio Banderas as honorary president. Inside the anchoring building, Boga Style Home curated a welcome lounge. The venue also flaunted various branded photo opps for easy social media sharing and a media lounge by WordPress.com. With Fort Lauderdale’s reputation as the “Yachting Capital of the World," it is no surprise it is home to the largest in-water boat show worldwide. In 2017, the 58th edition of the event ran across seven locations in Fort Lauderdale, spanning three million square feet of exhibit space and attracting 105,000 visitors. The event has 1,000 exhibitors and more than 1,200 boats on display, as well as courses sponsored by Carefree Boat Club and kids fishing clinics. In an attempt to boost social engagement, the show embraced #FLIBS for promotions and postings. Next: October 21-November 4, 2018

In its 77th year, Progressive Miami International Boat Show over President’s Day weekend welcomed 1,100 exhibitors, 1,400 boats, and more than 97,000 visitors to Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin off Key Biscayne. New to 2018 was the addition of sailboats, catamarans, and sailing gear under the umbrella Strictly Sail Miami. The influx of boat enthusiasts sprouts corresponding events like Miami Yacht Show along in Miami Beach along Collins Avenue waterway. More than $3 billion in product was on display this year. Hurricane Irma forced officials to postpone, and then cancel, the 47th edition of the Miami International Auto. The show, from the South Florida Automobile Dealers Association, is set to return to the Miami Beach Convention Center this fall. It will bring back popular exhibits such as Memory Lane, Havana Classics, Million Dollar Alley, Topless in Miami, Camp Jeep, and Car Boutique. Next: October 5-13, 2018

Held twice a year in Fort Lauderdale and twice in Miami Beach, the sold-out shows brings together design-minded homeowners, vendors, and designers. In March 2018, the Miami edition announced two new features: Home M.A.D.E. and Family Day with the Perez Art Museum Miami. Home M.A.D.E. Design Studio is an interactive learning space will offer visitors a chance to get hands-on experience with interior design processes. The Miami Book Fair has expanded far beyond its street festival to become a nationally recognized, bilingual cultural institution. A highlight from 2017 was former Vice President Joe Biden, there to discuss his memoir Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship and Purpose. Patti Smith, Isabel Allende, and Ricard Blanco were also among the authors at the fair. With the introduction of the Porch, the fair embraced live music and entertainment in the evenings while continuing to up its multicultural presence. Now in its fifth year, Emerge Americas has solidified itself as a premier event for connecting technological innovators, business leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, and government officials from Latin America, North America, and Europe. With major names like Alex Rodriguez and Pitbull leading the speaking roster in years past, the conference has built its attendance to more than 13,000 participants. The 2018 panels will include representatives from Amazon Prime, Microsoft, Intel, and IBM. For budding entrepreneurs, the show also has a startup expo floor, hackathons, and pitch presentations. The 10th annual iteration of the weekend-long event featured a cattle exhibition, a horse show, and a real-life Farmville for kids. Also, a live auction of premium show cattle from across the country is simulcasted internationally. Taking place at the Ronald Reagan Equestrian Center at Tropical Park, the exhibition sees 50,000 guests from some 20 countries. With the Miami Beach Convention Center closed for renovations, the show moved to the Miami-Dade County Fair Expo Center, a location it will keep next year. It is considered the largest indoor antique show in America thanks to more than 600 recognized dealers from 28 countries presenting over the course of four days. The relocation hasn’t hurt attendance: Upwards of 18,000 antique-lovers, collectors, and curators continue to visit the show each year. Next: February 2019

With a 30-year history, the cruise-industry event Seatrade Cruise Global draws nearly 700 suppliers and 11,000 attendees every year. Spearheaded by the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, the week-long festival is a literal and figurative parade of events, culminating in the Calle Ocho Festival, a celebration of Hispanic and Latin American culture in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. Calle Ocho is considered the largest Hispanic festival in the country, covering 20 blocks and attracting thousands of revelers. The Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s Winterfest Boat Parade in Fort Lauderdale grabs the attention of an estimated one million people. Families and parties line up along the 12-mile route throughout Intracoastal Waterway to watch dozens of lighted vessels nod the holiday spirit. The month-long O’Miami Poetry Festival takes place every April with the goal of exposing every person in Miami-Dade County to a poem. Now in its in seventh year, the county-wide initiative places poems in unexpected places: on cups of cafecito in Little Havana, painted on parking garage walls, and even skywritten across Miami Beach. O’Miami is backed by the Knight Foundation. Its most famous endeavor was “Poems to the Sky,” in which artist Randy Burman painted two poems on the rooftops of buildings near the flight paths of departing and arriving flights at Miami International Airport. As many as 300,000 revelers have flocked to South Beach on Memorial Day weekend for a decentralized long weekend of parties, concerts, and club events. Now in its 18th year, the gathering also parallels with the Best of the Best Caribbean concert in Bayfront Park. South Florida’s flagship event celebrating lesbian pride magnetizes more than 5,000 Miami Beach guests each year. In 2017, Broadway star Beth Malone headlined the annual Very V.I.P. The event is presented by the Aqua Foundation for Women, a Miami-based organization that serves the lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community in South Florida through grants, scholarships, and other initiatives. The Junior Orange Bowl Parade is the anchoring event for the Junior Orange Bowl, which produces more than 15 annual youth events throughout the year. The festivities enter their 70th year in 2018. According to Coral Gables Police estimates, an average of 30,000 viewers packed the streets of Coral Gables the 69th Annual Junior Orange Bowl “A Groovy Gables Holiday” Parade in 2017, which was sponsored by the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Despite the Miami Beach Convention Center’s ongoing renovation and heavy traffic, Art Basel Miami Beach’s 16th edition brought in 82,000 visitors this year, compared to about 77,000 in 2017. Art lovers and industry professionals come to Miami Beach to see works in a variety of media exhibited by more than 250 galleries representing modern and contemporary artists from around the world. As the Miami Design Preservation League’s premier event, Art Deco Weekend hosts over 75 free cultural events. The event claims itself as the longest-running free cultural event in Miami Beach and draws around 150,000 people who come for the music, dance lessons, classic cars display, kids’ activities, retro fashions, and vintage sales. The festival brought in Michael Arenella, whose Jazz Age Lawn Party is a hit in New York City, for its 40th anniversary in early 2018. Next: January 2019

In 2018, Art Wynwood relocated to the Art Miami and Context Art Miami site on Biscayne Bay. Produced by Art Miami, the Art Wynwood debuted its seventh edition over President’s Day weekend, boasting work from 180 artists from 60 international galleries. Attendance was estimated at 25,000. It was announced during the fair that the Miami Yacht Show will be the fair’s neighbor at the Resorts World Miami waterfront property for Art Wynwood 2019 and beyond, where they will use the waterfront and concrete pads that Art Miami uses each December. The Design Center’s facility in Dania Beach is home to two markets annually, featuring workshops and discussions led by design-industry pros: Everything from licensing partnerships to rug trends to spa design is up for discussion.
