A Better Chance, a nonprofit organization that places minority children in a network of 200 private and public high schools, held an awards luncheon at the Waldorf=Astoria. Honorees were Solomon Trujillo, chairman, president and CEO of U S West Inc., and Theo Killion, vice president of human resources-store operations at The Limited Inc., and the Abyssinian Baptist Church Chancel Choir performed for guests (A Better Chance's president, Judith B. Griffin, is a member).

Oprah Winfrey was a special guest with a big surprise: She announced she had written A Better Chance a check for $10 million.
