At this year's Dining by Design in New York, the annual fund-raising event hosted by Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS featuring awe-inspiring dining settings, an unusual centerpiece sparked the crowd's interest—the virtual fire pit by Levy Lighting.
The flicking flames were part of Roche Bobois Paris's vignette, which was created by Stephen Burks, the designer of the company's Traveler chair. The cozy camp-like feel of the pavilion setting included his rustic furniture, a canopy, and sand-covered flooring, along with the projected fire.
Levy Lighting uses ultra short throw projection on a treated, holographic-like glass surface to achieve the Yule log look. Appropriate for a space where fire isn't permitted, the pit requires a minimum of about 14 inches of width space to fit the projectors. And it's custom-built for each application, so pricing varies.
