The BET awards hit the Shrine Auditorium last night, but Target got the party started early with a luncheon at Social Hollywood on Monday. The retailer took advantage of the music-industry guests in town for the main event to host an intimate luncheon in honor of Black Music Month (a White House-proclaimed recognition of African-American artists' contributions to the country) and L.A. Reid, who handpicked 12 songs from Island Def Jam Music Group for a "Platinum Stacks" compilation CD available at Target. To match Target's logo and branding, event producer Tarin Wilson at Plan A gave the room a clean and graphic look, with black-and-white patterned table linens. Krislyn Design created massive centerpieces in squat glass vases, featuring an array of flowers in Target's signature red.
After a speech by honoree Reid, Ne-Yo and Fabolous performed a short set. (Ne-Yo explained his imperceptible delay to the stage by giving a shout-out to the chef—he was so into the chicken entrée, he wasn't ready to get up from his seat.) Then guests headed out into the sunshine with cellophane packages containing their dessert: round white sandwich cookies stuffed with red filling, another nod to the sponsor's logo.
