Last week, Alexandria-based Discovery Communications promoted David Shackley from vice president of global events to senior vice president of creative. The British executive spent six years at AOL as the vice president of brand marketing and promotions before joining the media company that includes networks like the Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, and Planet Green.
“I think it’s more valuable to have a marketing background in the events business, so that the strategy and promotional marketing components don’t become an after-thought,” Shackley said. After 10 months spent handling corporate and consumer events, network launches, and television premieres, he will now work across all networks and with the in-house creative agency to steer the brand's image. That's not to say his involvement in events is over. Shackley is currently planning Discovery's TV upfronts.
