1. INSTAGRAM LAUNCHES USER-CURATED EVENTS PAGE: In another effort to replicate Snapchat, Instagram has debuted a user-curated video section highlighting live events. Fortune: "On Wednesday, the Facebook-owned photo-sharing app introduced a new channel to its Explore section that is focused on user videos captured during specific events. The new channel will be customized for each user and display videos for events based on a user’s preferences and habits, according to the company’s blog post. This new type of channel is similar to the interest or topic-based video channels Instagram debuted earlier this summer. It’s also not the first time Instagram has experimented with event-themed video. For Halloween last year, it created a special section where users could watch handpicked videos of the holiday. Instagram has been investing in video for quite some time, but it’s hard to ignore the new video channel’s resemblance to rival Snapchat’s event-based Stories, which are reels of photos and videos publicly shared by users at a particular event. Two weeks ago, Instagram very clearly copied Snapchat’s Stories feature, which lets users create a daily collection of photos or videos for all their friends to see for 24 hours before disappearing." http://for.tn/2bdy1Kr
2. KANYE WEST TO RETURN TO NEW YORK FASHION WEEK: Kanye West is returning to New York Fashion Week, but this time he'll hold his show, which will showcase the Yeezy Season 4 collection on the event's opening day September 7. Women's Wear Daily: "While blue-chip events are typically reserved for the tail-end of New York Fashion Week, this season’s opening day is shaping up to be a crowded one. The Tom Ford presentation and Cartier Fifth Avenue mansion unveiling are scheduled head-to-head that day—both kicking off at 7 p.m. West unveiled his Yeezy Season 3 collection with a late-afternoon blockbuster listening party and performance art piece at Madison Square Garden. In addition to selling out the arena, West’s show also drew more than 20 million live-stream viewers. Kanye’s Yeezy collections mainly hedge their sales on footwear—which have proven to be a branding and commercial boon for the musician. His Yeezy sneakers have incited a craze on the resale market—selling for multitudes more than their shelf price." http://bit.ly/2bdmUkC
3. OLYMPICS OFFICIAL ARRESTED FOR TICKET SCALPING: Police arrested a senior Olympic official from Ireland on Wednesday as part of an illegal ticket scalping investigation at the Rio Games. Associated Press: “Patrick Hickey, a member of the International Olympic Committee's executive board, was accused of plotting with at least nine others to sell tickets above face value in a scheme that authorities say netted about $3 million in profits. At least a half dozen police officers went to the luxury hotel in the upscale Barra da Tijuca neighborhood in the early morning hours to arrest the 71-year-old Hickey, who fell ill and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. Hickey's alleged involvement was through Ireland's Olympic committee, which police said helped transfer tickets to an unauthorized vendor who would set high fees and disguise the transaction as a hospitality package. Hickey was charged with conspiracy, ticket scalping and ambush marketing and will be detained while the investigation continues. … After the first arrests last week, the Olympic Council of Ireland said it would investigate why some of its tickets were in the possession of the suspects. The OCI name was visible on tickets displayed by police, but the Irish said they had no knowledge of the people in custody.” http://apne.ws/2boaRS4
