October 8, 2015: What Pandora's Acquisition of Ticketfly Means, Lex Luthor Offers Free Wi-Fi to Comic Con Attendees, How Hotels Are Catering to Millennial Weddings

1. WHAT PANDORA'S ACQUISITION OF TICKETFLY MEANS FOR THE MUSIC INDUSTRY: Internet radio company Pandora announced yesterday that it will buy event ticketing company Ticketfly for $450 million. The acquisition is expected to strengthen the connection between music listeners and live events and affect the touring industry in a big way. Billboard: "Before the acquisition, Pandora's audio messages would direct listeners to a third-party ticketing site. Now the discovery loop will be closed, in many instances. An artist can use the Pandora platform to reach fans in targeted markets and sell concert tickets within the same ecosystem. This kind of seamless experience will make a big difference to the touring industry, WME music head Marc Geiger told Billboard earlier this year…While the average American goes to perhaps two concerts each year, the more active Pandora listeners are likely to attend far more."

2. LEX LUTHOR WILL OFFER FREE WI-FI AT NEW YORK COMIC CON: In what appears to be a viral marketing ploy, New York Comic Con attendees will get free Wi-Fi courtesy of Lex Luthor, the fictional villain played by Jesse Eisenberg in next year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice film. The Hollywood Reporter:  "The unexpected crossover between fantasy and reality comes via the FAQ page of the official NYCC site, which answers the question 'Is There Wifi In The Javits [Center]?' with 'Yes. Free WiFi throughout the Javits Center will be provided by LexCorp Industries,' referencing the business entity fronted by the Superman villain since the mid-1980s. The response continues, 'LexCorp unites humanity through technology. We believe in technology as a means of communication, unification and a source of inspiration. To access the WiFi on-site at the Javits Center, connect to the "LexCorp" network from the list of available networks. You will automatically be redirected to the LexCorp WiFi login page where you can enter your email address and click "CONNECT" to gain access to the network. LexCorp — together, we can build a better world.'"

3. HOW HOTELS ARE CATERING TO MILLENNIAL WEDDINGS: Looking to serve a digitally connected generation and evolve alongside new technology, hotels are offering less conventional services for weddings. Financial Post: “For couples who do not want to rely on friends and family to post photos online, some hotels offer specialized assistance. At Velas resorts in Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Maya, and Riviera Nayarit, a personal social media concierge will post images to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram throughout the wedding ceremony, and compile a Pinterest board for the couple after the event. For family and friends unable to make it to Mexico for the wedding, the concierge will stream the ceremony live through a personalized page. The four W hotels in New York City also added a social media concierge service last year.”
