For its holiday promotion, RetailMeNot, a web site that offers digital discounts to shoppers, decided to stage an event in a town with a fitting name: Coupon. Brand reps decided to travel to the small town in Pennsylvania to surprise residents with a holiday gift.
Initially, they had planned to gift residents with items from their holiday wish lists, which they collected by traveling door-to-door during surprise visits. But the plan changed once reps gathered feedback from the residents, who almost universally wanted to gift a neighbor, family member, or friend, instead of receiving a present for themselves. Gifts included refrigerators, toys, bikes, a porch swing, and even a trip to Disney World for a young girl who wanted to meet the princess characters.
Brand staffers headed to a local shopping center (or made some phone calls) to collect the gifts. Then, on December 6, RetailMeNot staged a gathering at the home of a local, and guests were gifted amid holiday light displays and a visit from Santa. Here's a look inside the festive promotion.
