Passers-by in Union Square might have been surprised to see a live cow in the window of the Barnes & Noble Booksellers store. Those curious enough to venture inside were greeted by Chloe, a black and white cow from All-Tame Animals. Housed in a green wooden pen by set designer Randy DeLuca, Chloe was on display to promote a discussion and signing of the CowParade New York book and calendar.
Upstairs on the fourth floor, children were invited to help paint a fiberglass cow provided by CowParade, the organization responsible for the herds of painted bovines placed all over the city. While they waited to paint, kids quickly gobbled up a box of 500 Goetze's Cow Tales caramel cream candies-bought by Donna Passannante, the store's director of author promotions and special events.
As the kids painted, a long line of customers (mostly their parents) waited to have their newly purchased books signed by artists Randy Gilman, Edwina Sandys and Martie Holmer, whose work is featured in the book. Those patient enough to wait also received a free poster, provided by Workman Publishing Company, the book's publisher, and printed by V&M Computer Graphics.
