Spring was in the air and in the decor at the Museum of Modern Art’s 37th annual Party in the Garden fund-raiser, which also celebrated MoMA chairman emeritus David Rockefeller’s 90th birthday. Sponsored by Gucci and organized by MoMA director of special programming and events Nicholas Apps, the affair—the first in the garden since MoMA’s reopening last November—raised $3 million.
For the cocktail hour, Avi Adler decorated open tents with tall, bright yellow floral arrangements on bars draped with white tablecloths and yellow runners, and smaller arrangements on cocktail tables with white linens trimmed with yellow ribbon. Several mirror balls hung from the ceiling, and Bentley Meeker added soft pink lighting. Dinner in the spacious museum lobby had a blue and white marine theme as a tribute to Rockefeller’s love for sailing. For centerpieces Adler and partner David Stark filled square wooden boxes (made to imitate a captain’s paneled galley) with hydrangeas.
Glorious Food served lobster Thermidor, summer corn off the cob, and.phparagus for the 850-person dinner, and an assortment of sweet desserts and champagne at the after-dinner dance, where more than 1,000 attendees took in a performance by the Cowboy Junkies.
