Even Mother Nature cooperated with the theme at the launch event for Ralph Lauren Fragrances' new scent, Blue. While the blue sky didn't exactly match the azure color of the perfume bottle, it sufficed for the breakfast, which took place beneath a tent atop the Hudson Hotel's 24th floor penthouse. Andrea Robinson, president of Ralph Lauren Fragrances, hired Donna Berg of Donna B Productions to produce the event, which was filled with blue touches to drive home the scent's name and bottle color.
Berg gave the event a nautical theme to match both the scent's color and marketing catchphrases. (Coincidentally, real battleships were making their way towards the Hudson River for Fleet Week). The boat-travel theme meshed with the scent's slogan—"A new destination fragrance"—which several Ralph Lauren execs repeated during the breakfast. "It's like breakfast on the French Riviera," said Berg, as she described the inspiration behind the theme. A white, boat-shaped counter decorated with blue hydrangea, blue bottles of Saratoga water and blue drinking glasses was the decorative centerpiece at the event. Each breakfast plate included muffins wrapped in blue napkins, and coconut smoothies were served in blue glasses.
The tented patio was filled with white folding chairs and tables topped with white raffia tablecloths and hydrangea centerpieces, and caterwaiters dressed in white pants and white Polo shirts served whipped egg hors d'oeuvres with creme fraiche and caviar in eggshells dyed blue. During the pre-breakfast coffee hour, a mix CD of blue-themed songs (Madonna's "True Blue," Elton John's "Blue Eyes" and "Blue Skies" by Tom Waits) played in the background.
