Victims' assistance nonprofit Safe Horizon brought the experience of a day in the park into the 69th Regiment Armory for its ninth annual award luncheon. R Cano Events worked with designer Susan Edgar of Flowers, Sticks and Stones to create a lush garden inside the armory, with spring flowers like hydrangeas and tulips and a working fountain adding cheer to the Veuve Clicquot-sponsored cocktail hour preceding the awards presentation. Gerberas and ranunculus in square wooden boxes lined the staircase outside the venue.
After mimosas and bellinis, the crowd moved into the dining room where lazy susans sat atop spring green table linens, conveniently allowing guests to serve themselves dishes from R Cano's luncheon menu: herb roasted breast of capon, roulade of seared tuna, grilled flank steak, poached jumbo shrimp and marinated asparagus. Table centerpieces varied from tall orange gerbera arrangements to purple hydrangeas in squat glass vases. Hyacinths and tulips in tiny terra-cotta pots peppered the tabletops for extra color.
Through a videotaped address, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton lauded the nonprofit's achievements and helped the charity honor the award recipients, including Marie Claire editor in chief Lesley Jane Seymour, for the magazine's socially responsible editorial content. The armory was a significant venue choice for Safe Horizon: It was where the nonprofit helped 45,000 people in the days after September 11, 2001.
