This Week: Holiday Tree and King Kong

Today, Rockefeller Center gets decked out for the lighting of this year’s Christmas tree, and the Independent Feature Project honors indie film with its Gotham awards at Pier Sixty. The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater Foundation celebrates opening night at City Center and a dinner at the Sheraton New York. Also Wednesday, Fortune magazine’s Innovation Forum business sessions come to Jazz at Lincoln Center; the conference continues through Thursday.

On Thursday, the musical version of The Color Purple opens at the Broadway Theatre; a party follows at the New York Public Library. NYC & Company holds its Leadership in Tourism award dinner at Pier Sixty. Thursday evening, and at the Seventh Regiment Armory, the Municipal Art Society fetes Channel Thirteen/WNET at its annual benefit.

Friday is the first day of the Sorrento Cheese Christmas in Little Italy holiday festival, which takes over the neighborhood each weekend through December 18. Ron Howard will be honored by the American Museum of the Moving Image at its annual black-tie Salute Sunday at the Waldorf-Astoria. In anticipation of its December 14 public opening, Universal Pictures premieres King Kong on Monday with screenings at two 42nd Street theaters; a private party will be held at the Show Piers on the Hudson.
