VENUE: New W Hotel in Times Square

December 18, 2001, 12:00 AM EST

Just in time for New Year's Eve, Starwood is opening its fifth W hotel in New York. Like the others, the W New York - Times Square aims to mix the style of a boutique hotel with the backing of a big-time hospitality company. The 52-story, 509-room hotel will hold six conference rooms totaling 6,000 square feet, and the 6,000-square-foot reception area on the fourth floor (rendering shown here) will feature white leather seating squares, large hanging lamps and a black lacquer bar, with glowing resin alcoves lining the room. Downstairs, Steve Hanson (Blue Water Grill, the coming Fiamma) will open seafood restaurant Blue Fin, which will provide in-house catering and seat 400 people on two levels that look out on Times Square. And Rande Gerber's (Underbar, Cherry) new Whiskey bar (7,500 square feet) will feature a dance floor and screen room. The hotel opens on December 27, but the big opening party (remember the W on Union Square's big bash?) will wait until February. --Chad Kaydo
