September 13, 2016: N.C.A.A. to Relocate Seven Championships From North Carolina, Inside a Halloween-Theme Fashion Week Show, Twitter Launches Live-Streaming Notifications

1. N.C.A.A. TO RELOCATE SEVEN CHAMPIONSHIPS FROM NORTH CAROLINA: The N.C.A.A. has announced it will move seven championship events from Greensboro, North Carolina, because of the state’s anti-L.G.B.T. House Bill 2. The Atlantic Coast Conference is also considering pulling its football championship from the state. Associated Press: “After the NCAA announced it is pulling seven championship events from North Carolina for this year, Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford - whose league hosts many sporting events in the state, including its football championship game - said the ACC's council of presidents were set to discuss the law at a previously scheduled meeting later this week. The ACC football championship game, held in Charlotte since 2010, is the last marquee college sporting event left in the state during the 2016-17 season. While Swofford it would be ‘premature’ to make any decisions about holding events in North Carolina for now, he also issued a clear statement against the law. … The only championship events that can be hosted in North Carolina this academic year are ones determined when a team earns the right to play on its own campus. The state has been a frequent host for NCAA men's basketball tournament games. In all, the NCAA said North Carolina has hosted 251 men's tournament games since 1951, the most of any state. Athletic directors at three of the state's ACC schools - North Carolina's Bubba Cunningham, North Carolina State's Debbie Yow and Wake Forest's Ron Wellman - issued statements saying they were disappointed at the loss of events. Duke AD Kevin White went further, saying the school agreed with the NCAA's decision. NCAA President Mark Emmert said in statement Monday night that the governing body will delay announcements on future championship sites until early next year. That comes as it reviews responses to questionnaires required of prospective site hosts on how they would comply with the NCAA's anti-discrimination measure.” http://apne.ws/2cUbnpt

2. INSIDE A HALLOWEEN-THEME FASHION WEEK SHOW: Fashion shows usually tend to be serious affairs, but Yandy—a brand known for making outrageous “sexy” Halloween costumes such as a “Sexy Pizza Rat”—hosted a Fashion Week event that highlighted its new seasonal costumes and encouraged attendees to wear whatever they wanted. Racked: “Located at the highly glamorous and equally inconvenient Pier 59 Studios in Chelsea, the event looked far more like a regular fashion show than it needed to. One important difference, however, was that backstage at any other fashion presentation, it’s unlikely to hear someone yelling, ‘Who has the Donald Trump wig?’ What does one wear to a Halloween fashion show? None of us—fashion and non-fashion people alike—could seem to agree. There were floor-length sequin gowns, jeans and tank tops, and crappy Zara dresses (mine), but the one thing we all had in common was that we were there because it’s hilarious. … As unique as the event is to New York Fashion Week, Yandy actually faces the exact same conundrum as the rest of the industry: What's the point of showing clothes that are not meant to be worn until a time when they may be entirely irrelevant? When I ask CMO Charley Clemens why the Yandy Halloween Fashion Show exists, he explains, ‘I think this is the next level for us. We’re showcasing that we’re not only sexy Halloween costumes, we’re also fashionable and fun Halloween costumes that can be shown at a serious event.’ ‘We’re here, we’re at Fashion Week,’ adds VP of Merchandising Pilar Quintana. ‘A lot of our costumes mimic the ready-to-wear market. We’re following what’s going on on the regular runways with the silhouettes in the Halloween industry.’” http://bit.ly/2cWnCo3

3. TWITTER LAUNCHES LIVE-STREAMING NOTIFICATIONS: Building on its newfound focus on live streaming events, Twitter has launched a new notification button that allows users to subscribe to receive alerts when accounts they follow start broadcasting live streams on the app. TechCrunch: " When you receive the alert, you can immediately join the broadcast with just a tap. The feature works both for alerting users to new streams from Periscope, as well as for content from Twitter’s live streaming partners, such as the NFL. This feature was spotted earlier this month during testing. However, when BuzzFeed reported on the new addition’s existence, Twitter disabled the button and then told reporters that it was simply 'experimenting with different ways to discover live video on Twitter.' Twitter did not comment on the earlier report when asked about the launch today. However, we’ve confirmed with sources familiar with the new feature that it has now officially gone live for all users worldwide. … Live video is large part of Twitter’s shifting strategy these days. The company has forged deals this year with Wimbledon, the NFL to stream Thursday Night Football, Pac-12 Networks for college sports, CBSN for convention coverage, and Bloomberg for financial news. And today, Twitter and news startup Cheddar announced a similar partnership on a live streaming deal which will see the network’s financial news show 'Closing Bell' exclusively stream on Twitter from 3 to 4 P.M. ET, beginning in October." http://tcrn.ch/2cmH2Rn
