July 12, 2013: Gay Advocacy Groups to Boycott Winter Olympics?, New Calendar App Promotes Events, Baseball Cards Displayed as Art

1. GAY ADVOCACY GROUPS SEEK WINTER OLYMPICS BOYCOTT: A new antigay law in Russia has prompted gay-rights groups to call for a boycott of the 2014 Winter Olympics in the Russian resort area of Sochi. Leaders of the movement say they hope to convince sponsors to withdraw their support of the games and athletes to speak out on the issue. Skift: “We don’t think we can get as far as for the athletes to not go to the Olympics—and actually that’s not our goal,” said Nia Long of Rusa L.G.B.T. “But maybe they could, while there, speak up on the question of equality.” http://bit.ly/134HKaI

2. SOCIAL CALENDAR APP OFFERS NEW WAY TO MARKET EVENTS: Social event planner UpTo has relaunched its mobile calendar app, allowing users to share their calendars and view event listings from their friends as well as local businesses. The Cleveland Cavaliers, Ticketmaster, and the state of Michigan have already signed up to use the service. TechCrunch: "For users, this means that they now have the ability to peruse mobile calendar streams of their favorite local teams, venues, bars or even their children’s soccer club. Once they find events they want to remember, like an upcoming soccer game, they can add it to their calendar or just follow the teams’ stream on UpTo." http://tcrn.ch/1568jLM

3. BASEBALL CARDS DISPLAYED AS ART: In time for next week's M.L.B. All-Star Game in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has opened a show of 600 rare baseball cards. The exhibit draws from the 31,000-card Jefferson R. Burdick Collection. New York Times: "The museum does not provide the intriguing back stories of the men depicted in these cards. For that you may need the indispensable Web site baseball-reference.com, or, better yet, the classic oral history The Glory of Their Times, by Lawrence S. Ritter, probably the best baseball book ever written. So do some research first, perhaps, and then go to the museum to slip into another baseball era." http://nyti.ms/13F5Mw6
