What’s Next for Your Event?

At the Event Innovation Forum in New York, the producer of Google’s I/O conference shared how to reinvigorate annual events.

Attendees who return to annual events expect new ideas and inspiration year after year, and planners have to deliver. But where do you begin? In this session, Amanda Matuk, executive producer of the I/O developer conference at Google, shared how her team reinvented the conference in the style of a music festival, changing everything from the venue, the programming, the design, and the catering. It wasn’t change for change’s sake—it was based on attendee feedback and a desire to integrate Google’s unique company culture into the event. “Annual events face a lot of pressure to stay fresh,” Matuk said. “But the most meaningful change is a change that affects a process or a business outcome.” Here’s how they pulled it off.
