NATIONAL: Event venues across North America will be illuminated in red on the evening of Sept. 1 from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. in local time zones. #RedAlertRestart aims to amplify the voices of the live event industry and encourage Congress to resume talks on the Restart Act. A similar U.K. event on Aug. 11 included 715 structures; organizers hope to double that for the North American event.
CALGARY: The Brar family, owner of the Plaza Theatre for the past 40 years, has announced that the landmark is up for lease. The Plaza Theatre was built in the late 1920s as an automobile garage; it opened its doors as a theater on Jan. 10, 1935, with the comedy Mr. Skitch. Since 1995, the Plaza has operated as a first-run, arthouse cinema.
HAMILTON, ONT.: Though the full annual music and art festival in Hamilton has been canceled this year, Supercrawl will host a series of socially-distanced concerts with a capacity of 100. From Sept. 25-27, attendees can purchase a ticket for five musical performances at the roof of the York Boulevard parking garage. Artists will be announced Sept. 3, and more details will come when a release goes out.
MONTREAL: POP Montreal announced a live/digital hybrid of event performances for this year’s festival on Sept. 23-27. The shows will focus on local artists and take place in various venues with a limited capacity. Each show venue will be revealed at the last minute to ticket holders, and all events will be accessible online via the POP Montreal stream “Funhouse 2.0” for at-home viewing.
VANCOUVER: The Brunch Club is hosting a Mean Girls-style high tea on Nov. 21-22. The event includes themed dishes, drinks, and decor with clips from the 2008 classic. The brunch will pop up at a secret location, and tickets include a pink high tea and one themed cocktail. A cash bar will be available, too.
