On what was a big night for fashion shows in town—which also included Macy's annual Passport event at Barker Hangar—the Los Angeles County affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure welcomed a crowd to Smashbox Studios in West Hollywood for the eighth annual Fashion for the Cure benefit and runway show. Onelia Estudillo and Rachel Berg co-chaired the committee, and ConspiracyLA produced it.
The evening began around 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception and a silent auction that included lots such as California vacation pacakges, jewels from Neil Lane (including a pair of disco-ball-looking diamond earrings made just for the occasion), and fashions and accessories like a Marc Jacobs handbag.
An adjacent V.I.P. room had a sponsor appropriate for health-conscious Angelenos and fashion types: Jamba Juice. Guests mingled with their smoothies amid green hedging and modern white sofa seating. A Jamba logo gobo decked a hedge, and a photo booth from Blue Photo Booth snapped guests' mugs.
The fashion show began around 8 p.m. preceded by remarks on the runway from the Komen team, plus a speech from V Krishnan Ramanujan, a Cedars-Sinai doctor working on breast cancer research and a recipient of the evening's researcher award. The show itself included Diane von Furstenberg's 2009/2010 resort/spring collection with professional models and celebrities like Mya and Denise Richards—followed by a short runway presentation featuring cancer survivors, who garnered a standing ovation from the crowd.
