A Sailing Expedition With a Pirate Twist

Yankee Adventures, a Miami-based boat charter, is now offering teambuilding activities for corporate groups. Led by Captain John Watson, a sailor with nearly 20 years of experience, the company expanded its services in March from primarily working with the Boy Scouts of America to offering adult sailing lessons and pirate-themed boat outings around South Florida. The Yankee, a 78-foot topsail schooner, is a replica of an 1880s pirate ship with two cannons, a large galley that comfortably accommodates four, and wide decks for as many as 48 people for daytime events.

Groups learn to hoist and lower the ship's seven sails, each of which require eight people to maneuver. For those looking for more adventure, the company will bury treasure—such as branded signs or gifts—at a designated landmark on the route and provide maps for locating the booty. The Yankee can sleep 12 in its six staterooms for overnight charters. The boat rents for $500 an hour, with a two-hour minimum, or $1,000 for four hours.
