The academy’s annual Governors Ball took place at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland immediately following the Oscars on Sunday. This year’s event—which drew 1,500 winners, nominees, presenters, and other industry types—was an homage to global cinema, featuring a presentation of iconic movie moments plus ballroom decor that evoked old movie-theater designs. Lois Burnwell, a makeup artist and chair of the academy's awards and events committee, oversaw the event for the second year. She worked with Cheryl Cecchetto of Los Angeles-based Sequoia Productions on the ball's decor and production. Vanity Fair’s Oscars after-party continued to be the most exclusive bash in town. The Sunday-night event once again took place at a custom-built space between the Wallis Annenberg Center for Performing Arts and City Hall, and was hosted by new Vanity Fair editor Radhika Jones. A wall of greenery and marquee signage created an instant photo op at one end of the bash, while the rest of the party had simple decor, allowing the unique paneled ceiling and 50-foot bar to take center stage. Guests dined on fried chicken prepared by chef Thomas Keller, as well as 1,700 In-N-Out Burgers that were served throughout the night.

Starburst light fixtures and irregular-shaped decor pieces, illuminated with white lights, comprised a cloud-like ceiling installation that served as the evening’s focal point.

The circular dining room included wood-paneled walls installed with large flat screens for viewing the broadcast and suede banquettes around the perimeter. Lighting came from an oculus-like fixture in the center of the ceiling, as well as from candlelight, wall sconces, and table lamps fitted with custom shades showcasing photographs from the Vanity Fair archives—including several of this year’s nominated actors. More than 1,400 lighting fixtures were installed over seven days; it was the party’s biggest lighting designs ever. For the third year in a row, Mark Seliger took portraits of guests exclusively for Instagram. The magazine partnered with Carol production designer Judy Beckett to design the studio. Chef Thomas Keller created the event’s menu. After dinner, the tables were removed from the dining room and a central bar was installed to transform the space into a cocktail area, presented by American Airlines.

During dinner, guests were immersed in a series of large-scale projections that portrayed Jerusalem scenes. The projections slowly and subtly transitioned from day to night over the course of the meal, surprising guests.

A massive throng of stars, including Oscar-winner Common, hit the Vanity Fair party at its new location in Beverly Hills. While Basil Walters, the architect behind the party, said the venue “has the potential to change the scope” of the guest count, it’s still A-list only. “The number of people who want to come is so much larger than any venue could accommodate,” he said.

For HBO's 2010 West Coast launch of the series Boardwalk Empire, set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, there was perhaps no more apt venue choice than the Santa Monica Pier, where the creaking wooden slats and historic 1923 carousel set an evocative backdrop. Caravents produced the Santa Monica event, re-creating the look of vintage Atlantic City. The program partly had the feel of a boardwalk carnival, complete with a barker, contortionist, fortune-tellers, and an authentic soda fountain positioned within the pier's carousel area. The rest of the staging conjured a speakeasy environment, with an 11-piece orchestra, dance performances from the era, and gaming tables.
