Oscars 2019: Glamorous Party Highlights From the Week's Biggest Events

See how Vanity Fair, Essence, Elton John, Mercedes-Benz, and more celebrated the 91st Academy Awards.

February 26, 2019

Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Governors Ball The academy’s annual Governors Ball took place at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland immediately following the Oscars on Sunday. This year’s event—which drew 1,500 winners, nominees, presenters, and other industry types—was an homage to global cinema, featuring a presentation of iconic movie moments plus ballroom decor that evoked old movie-theater designs. Lois Burnwell, a makeup artist and chair of the academy's awards and events committee, oversaw the event for the second year. She worked with Cheryl Cecchetto of Los Angeles-based Sequoia Productions on the ball's decor and production. (Cecchetto and her team have been producing the Governors Ball for 30 consecutive years.) Photo: Jerry Hayes PhotographyDespite months of controversy, Sunday night's 91st Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre were ultimately a success according to event professionals, due to a unique proscenium by set designer David Korins, engaging musical numbers, a diverse group of presenters, and passionate speeches from winners.

For many industry insiders, though, the real draw of Oscars week is the pre- and post-ceremony parties, dinners, and cocktail receptions. While most award-season events have tight security offering celebrities some semblance of privacy, the Oscars take it a bit further: Some of the night's most high-profile events have complete bans on social media posts and other press.

The biggest example this year was Jay-Z and Beyoncé's uber-exclusive Oscars party at the Chateau Marmont. The couple reportedly personally approves every name on the guest list, and attendees are asked not to take any photos. Though only in its second year, the Hollywood Reporter recently described the event as "the hottest Oscar party in town." Similarly, Madonna's post-Oscars bash, held annually at the home of her manager, Guy Oseary, also had a strict ban on photos.

But plenty of buzzy after-parties did still allow press coverage, including Vanity Fair's long-running Oscars party—complete with the traditional In-N-Out Burgers—plus the Elton John AIDS Foundation's elegant viewing party, which raised a whopping $6.3 million in one evening.

And, of course, the Academy's own Governors Ball remains the night's first stop for the industry's elite. Produced by Sequoia Productions for the 30th consecutive year, the gathering took on an elegant theater-inspired design with plenty of sparkling gold touches—plus 400 distinct floral arrangements.

Click through the slide show to see inside these and other Oscars week events, including Essence's art-inspired Black Women in Hollywood luncheon, Cadillac's upscale dinner party, Icon Mann's costume exhibit, and more.

Veteran production designer David Korins handled the set design for the first time this year, creating an asymmetrical proscenium made with 115 foam blocks. "For this year's Oscars I have designed a world based on the ideas of inclusion and community," he wrote on Instagram. "The design uses warm, welcoming shapes that will not only reach out and wrap around the audience but towards the viewers at home. ... It is warm, welcome, feminine, and a picture of what I want the world to be." Throughout the evening, the set cycled through 15 different looks, from 40,000 roses from OnlyRoses in the shapes of ribbons, to waterfall-like strands made from 41,000 Swarovski crystals, to gold leaf-covered Oscar statues.

Rolex sponsored the Academy Awards' green room for the fourth time, this year designing an under-the-sea theme linked to the brand's Perpetual Planet campaign. Event Eleven handled production, while Warner Bros. Design Studio handled the scenic build. Located backstage at the Dolby Theatre, guests entered the space through a bronzed door resembling a hatch. The interior used large underwater photos lit from behind to create a dramatic, realistic feel.

‘Vanity Fair’ Oscars Party
‘Vanity Fair’ Oscars Party
The New York Times might think the Vanity Fair Oscars party has lost some of its appeal, but the annual Sunday-night event still drew a who's-who of Hollywood stars such as newly minted Oscar winners Lady Gaga, Spike Lee, Olivia Colman, and Regina King. Hosted by editor Radhika Jones, the party again took place in a custom-built venue between the Wallis Annenberg Center for Performing Arts and City Hall. The space comprised a few different spaces, including its signature striped carpet, a glass-encased reception pavilion, and a banquette-filled dining room where poached sea bass and roasted broccoli were served during the ceremony. As per tradition, In-N-Out Burgers were served later in the evening.

Raspberry French macarons were imprinted with the foundation's logo; additional cookies took the shape of a red AIDS ribbon.

'Essence' Black Women in Hollywood Awards
'Essence' Black Women in Hollywood Awards
The magazine hosted its 12th annual Black Women in Hollywood awards on Thursday afternoon at the Beverly Wilshire. Intended to honor and celebrate Hollywood's most impactful African-American women, this year's honorees were Regina Hall, Amandla Stenberg, Kiki Layne, and Jenifer Lewis.  Show development and production—including the overall design and fabrication as well as the eye-catching stage backdrop and set design—was handled by the Essence event team with longtime collaborator AGENC. The colorful floral design came from Bloom & Plume's Maurice Harris. "We are inspired by the women we celebrate and this year we looked at our honorees and what their message was in their work—especially how the roles they play speak to our community," said Jovanca Maitland, Essence's director of live events and experiential. "These honorees use their art as actors to shine a light on what may be affecting us in our community. These are topics that are tough to talk about but are important to the discussion. We are also creatively inspired by paintings, colors, and images that are of black culture."

"Each year, the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards luncheon starts with the 'power of our presence' as the home base," Maitland said. "We then look at our honorees’ body of work to create the theme, which this year was art and activism. The combined work of art they create in their films each spotlighted activism in work and in life." The team used a palette of reds, blues, and yellows, combined with ripped patterns and prints, to evoke the idea of feminine power.  "This is the first time we added flowers to the stage to add softness to the frames, creating another emphasis on the art and the feminine power," Maitland added.
