Givenchy, in celebrating its first-ever Manhattan flagship, staged a one-off show that was a powerful tribute to New York City on September 11. The riverside setting, on Pier 26 in TriBeCa, allowed for an unobstructed view of the Freedom Tower from every seat. Nearly 10,000 square feet of original artwork was painted, by Oliphant Studios, onto the 19 24-foot-high fabric theatrical drops that surrounded the dramatic Marc Jacobs show backdrop and surround. The February 19 show, produced by KCD at the Park Avenue Armory, was a sensual recreation of Diana Vreeland's 'Red Room' living room, as inspired by a 'Garden in Hell' Jeremiah Goodman painting seen by Jacobs. The space measured 158 by 50 feet, with runway, stage, and seats all hand-painted to match. (Some 700 guests sat in Vreeland's 'living room' while models emerged from a gray version of the same room). 'Marc loved the idea of a trompe-l'oeil interior,' said set designer Stefan Beckman, who had less than 48 hours to transform the venue following the Tommy Hilfiger show.

The setting was the star of Spike Jonze and Jonah Hill’s 100% Lost Cotton Fashion Week play that doubled as Opening Ceremony’s spring show on September 7. Held at the iconic Metropolitan Opera House, the location wasn’t immediately clear from the address on the invitation: 109 Amsterdam Avenue turned out to be a loading dock, which guests were ushered through before finding their seats behind the curtain. The rare perspective for guests, facing the venue’s plush red seats and famous chandeliers, allowed them to watch the cast, which consisted of the likes of Karlie Kloss, John Cameron Mitchell, Bobby Cannavale, Catherine Keener, Rashida Jones, and Elle Fanning.

Most guests that attended the fashion show heeded Dior's advice to take one of several chartered ferries that left every 10 minutes from the East River pier at 35th Street directly to the Navy Yard. On board, champagne was served and even all the seats were individually wrapped in Dior cloth with the fashion house's name embroidered on the headrests. Following the show, the same ferries shuttled guests back to Manhattan for dinner and an after-party.

If there’s a large-scale venue in Manhattan, chances are Moncler has used it. For its February 8 Moncler Grenoble presentation, the high-fashion Italian skiwear brand took over the Hammerstein Ballroom to stage a Villa Eugenie-produced extravaganza. The event boasted 10 opera singers from the Pendulum Choir on oscillating pendulums that swayed as they sang in front of a stack of 60 illuminated boxes, each containing a model wearing an outfit from the fall collection. The nearly half-hour performance had a mandate to start on time in order to allow editors to make the dash across the East River to catch the Alexander Wang show.

Ever enchanted by florals, Dior creative director Raf Simons utilized 300,000 stems of hanging foliage that included orchids, wisteria, and lianas, among others, mixed with plants both real and artificial, as his runway backdrop. The jungle-like setting, filled with tropical cascades of fabric flowers and real plants painted canary yellow, fuchsia pink, and chlorophyll green, was a nod to Dior’s many links to nature. In total, 48,438 square feet of decor—32,292 square feet of walls plus 16,146 square feet of roofs—was used.
