While millions of gamers around the country were lining up to purchase the new Nintendo Wii gaming console, some in Hollywood were spared the agony of the wait. A launch event at the massive, mansionlike Boulevard3 felt like a feast for the senses, with a two-story display gaming rig that showcased the Nintendo Wii’s features and a reflection pool designed after the system’s state-of-the-art controller. Instead of the classic ho-hum controllers that players operate from the couch with their hands, Wii uses motion-control technology that allows the users' movements to control the action on the screen—so the setup involved models playing both tennis and boxing games in appropriate wardrobe. The event, produced by A Squared Group, featured sound and entertainment courtesy of the Beastie Boys’ touring DJ, Mix Master Mike, in a spacious main area. The two-level room was stacked with gaming stations for guests to test-drive. Perrin Kaplan, vice president of marketing and corporate affairs for Nintendo of America, and George Harrison, senior vice president of marketing and corporate affairs, oversaw the event. Social Hollywood provided casual snacks including vegetable wraps and peanut-crusted apples. Celebrity guests Justin Timberlake, Marlon Wayans, and Macy Gray kept the plebes interested, and the party kept going until 2 AM.
