1. RIOTS GENERATE OLYMPIC FEARS: The London riots forced soccer officials to cancel two international matches yesterday with more postponements planned for the opening weekend of the English Premier League. Arsonists also destroyed the O2 Arena, one of the venues for next year's Olympics. The New York Times: "The timing could not have been worse. This week, executives from the International Olympic Committee and officials from nearly 200 national Olympic committees arrived in London for meetings about the Summer Games. At the same time, several test events, including beach volleyball, badminton and cycling, are being held."

2. L.A. CITY COUNCIL APPROVES STADIUM PLANS: From Los Angeles bureau chief Alice Dubin: The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Tuesday in favor of moving forward with plans to build an N.F.L. stadium on the L.A. Live campus downtown. The council voted on a Memorandum of Understanding that is not a binding contract, but a spelling out of guidelines for the plan to build AEG's Farmers Field. Among the considerations the memorandum details are plans for funding, what portions of the convention center will be torn down, how the facility will operate during construction, and plans for its remodel. The N.F.L .must also place a football team in the venue, a 72,000-seat space that would open in 2016.
More from The Los Angeles Times: "Approval of the stadium plan would kick off nine months of intensive negotiations with AEG, which has promised to pay for the new stadium and two parking garages on its own dime."
