1. INAUGURAL TICKET SNAFU: A glitch at Ticketmaster mistakenly sold tickets for the two official inaugural balls earlier than expected, frustrating people who thought they would have a chance at the sought-after passes. Washington Post: "Ticketmaster sent out an email after midnight taking responsibility for the mistake. But for some would-be ballgoers, the damage had already been done. … The Presidential Inaugural Committee, which oversees the events before and after the swearing-in ceremony, expressed regret over the glitch but said nothing could be done." http://wapo.st/V3nxPm
2. C.E.S. A DUD?: Business blog Quartz says this year’s week-long International Consumer Electronics Show is "the largest—and increasingly, the most irrelevant—of its kind." Microsoft, Apple, Google, and Amazon are sitting it out, and Nokia, Hewlett-Packard, and Dell have scaled back. "In part, this is due to the changed nature of product launches and their hype cycles—the Internet is after all the most effective consumer electronics catalog ever invented. The show may still be important to marketers, though. Keith Weed, chief marketing officer of Unilever, told AdAge: "We go to get a feel for the pace of change. We have an interest in the way people live their lives, and that has undergone radical change in the past five years, perhaps the most radical change since the Industrial Revolution. 4. OSCAR NOMS: Oscar host Seth MacFarlane will help announce the nominees Thursday morning, marking the first time in 40 years that the host has participated in the event. 5. HOCKEY RETURNS: A labor agreement will try to salvage the professional hockey season, which had been on hold since the fall, leaving arenas empty and fans at home. But the economic impact may not have been all bad. Toronto Globe and Mail: "With the N.H.L. shut down for almost half a season, more money may actually have stayed in the community, because it was being funnelled into local entertainment or sports activities. BOSTON: The New England Auto Show is at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center January 17 to 21. The event showcases $16 million worth of cars from 32 manufacturers.
The CityFeast, a benefit for the Joslin Diabetes Center, is on January 27. Tickets include a five-course dinner and wine pairing at one of the participating eateries, which span the South End, Seaport District, and the North End.
The Boston Harbor Hotel will host a private champagne reception and opening gala for the Boston Wine Festival on January 11.
CHICAGO: OfficeMax will host two days of free, public ice skating at Soldier Field on February 2 and 18. The free skate days are part of the OfficeMax Hockey City Classic Winter Festival activities, scheduled for February 1 to 18.

LOS ANGELES: For the 2013 SAG awards, conservation company Patagonia Sur is planting 3,400 trees—two for each of the 1,700 guests at the post-awards gala hosted by People magazine and the Entertainment Industry Foundation. In their gift bags, guests will find a code enabling them to register online to affix their names to the trees being planted in their honor within a part of Chilean Patagonia, now called the SAG Awards Forest.

ORLANDO: Disney's California Grill is now closed to undergo renovations to both the physical space and the menu. The two private dining rooms will remain, and there will be enhancements to the interactive kitchen. The restaurant will reopen in late summer.
