March 23, 2018: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Send Out Royal Wedding Invitations; As Hotels Become Social Spots, Properties Offer Spaces Just For Guests; Music Nonprofit to Register Thousands of Voters During March for Our Lives

1. PRINCE HARRY AND MEGHAN MARKLE SEND OUT ROYAL WEDDING INVITATIONS: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have sent out 600 invitations to their royal wedding. ITV: “The invitation—on a thick piece of card edged with a golden design—was printed by the same firm which produced the invites for the wedding of Prince William and Kate, as well as his uncle Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. It is Harry’s father, Prince Charles whose name appears at the top of the invitation along with his badge, The Prince of Wales’s Feathers, which date back to the time of The Black Prince in the 14th Century. It reads: His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales K.G., K.T. requests the pleasure of the company of …… at the Marriage of His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales with Ms Meghan Markle at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle on Saturday 19th May 2018 at 12 Noon followed by a reception at Windsor Castle. The dress code for the ceremony is ‘Uniform, Morning Coat or Lounge Suit’ for men and ‘Day Dress with Hat’ for women. The company which made them, Barnard & Westwood, describe themselves as "fine printers and bookbinders" and are based in central London. A 24-year-old who has recently completed her apprenticeship at the printers, Lottie Small, told us of her surprise when she was handed the job. Ms Small said she was ‘unbelievably excited’ and ‘squealed a little bit’ when she found out one a Friday afternoon.” https://bit.ly/2Gel1Eg

2. AS HOTELS BECOME SOCIAL SPOTS, PROPERTIES OFFER SPACES JUST FOR GUESTS: With more hotels becoming venues for public social events in their effort to compete with Airbnb, properties are also offering more spaces that are only available to guests who've booked a room. The New York Times: "For hotel operators, these private spaces are similar to the concierge-floor perks, where guests pay a premium for access to a lounge with business facilities and food, but expanded and fee-free. 'It’s similar to when hotels offer a ‘club level’ lounge, but in this case, the ‘club’ is open to all guests,' said Henry H. Harteveldt, a travel analyst and the president of Atmosphere Research Group. 'Business travelers, in particular, enjoy these facilities as they can provide a quiet place to meet, away from the hotel’s public spaces.' Some also function as private clubs in the Soho House mold, making amenities enjoyed by club members, such as private restaurants and meeting spaces, available to overnight guests. ... Other hotels are opening less defined spaces for quiet time. The Kimpton Hotel Monaco Portland in Oregon hosts a Quiet Room available to guests who request the key for 30-minute timeouts. There’s no fee to access the room, furnished with an armchair and reading lamp, which provides “a moment of privacy,” according to the hotel general manager Ryan Kunzer, for guests to pray, meditate, nurse or read. Hotel libraries stake out territory between boardrooms and meditation rooms, exclusively giving guests a shared residential-style room to relax in. The Betsy-South Beach in Miami Beach added a library in December 2016 when it expanded. The Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia furnishes its 25th-floor library in a 1929-vintage building with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, binoculars and tufted leather chairs. The guests-only library at the Faena Hotel Miami Beach includes cocktail service." http://nyti.ms/2Gg5X9o

3. MUSIC NONPROFIT TO REGISTER THOUSANDS OF VOTERS DURING MARCH FOR OUR LIVES: Music-focused nonprofit HeadCount will register thousands of voters during March for Our Lives demonstrations on Saturday. Billboard: “The march comes in the wake of the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, that took the lives of 14 students and three teachers, renewing the call for the federal government and states to pass commonsense gun restrictions. In addition to the student leaders' plea for bans on military-style AR-15 assault rifles and an age limit on purchasing such weapons, the music-oriented nonprofit HeadCount will be on the ground alongside the marchers in D.C. and at 2 dozen satellite marches nationwide to register voters at the events. ‘Hearing [prominent MSD student leader] Cameron Kasky and the powerful speech from [classmate and fellow activist] Emma Gonzalez on CNN, where she ended with a call for people to register to vote, made it obvious that it was time for HeadCount to engage,’ the group's executive director, Andy Bernstein, tells Billboard. HeadCount, which runs voter registration drives at live music events and festivals year-round—from Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza to shows by JAY-Z and Dead & Company—has partnered with the march to deploy as many as 1,000 volunteers in D.C. on Saturday; the organization has registered nearly half a million voters since 2004 at more than 100 concerts and festivals. Because HeadCount is a ‘very’ nonpartisan group, Bernstein says they had not partnered with other massive recent marches, but because they are so focused on the ideas of civic engagement and voting, it seemed appropriate to step up for Saturday's march.” https://bit.ly/2DMbO0T
