David Byrne is teaming up with public art organization Creative Time for an installation of "Playing the Building," an interactive sound-based exhibit opening Saturday. The unassuming work consists of a single wooden organ situated on the second-floor gallery space of the Battery Maritime Building. As the name of the piece indicates, guests can actually sit down and play the instrument, which is connected to the building's windows, columns, walls, and pipes with attached cables and wires. Tinkering with the organ results in a variety of vibrations, tones, and sounds that emanate from the structure. The installation will be open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through August 24.
