South Florida audiovisual production company Media Stage has partnered with U.K.-based Musion Systems and Miami-based Dream State to offer custom screen- and glasses-free hologram projections. Not only does the technology allow for lifelike prerecorded performances (by, say, a singer, DJ, or band) and attention-getting branding (like animated floating logos), it also offers live telepresence, where a moving, speaking hologram of a person appears in real time. For example, a C.E.O. could give a keynote address at a conference—even interacting with the audience—without being present at the event. How does it all work? The company uses high-definition cameras and playback via a projector rigged at a 90-degree angle in front of a specialized holographic foil. The projection hits a flat screen on the floor and “bounces” through the foil, creating an unobstructed 3-D image. Media Stage produces events worldwide; pricing varies depending on the location and logistics.
