Preparations for Mardi Gras 2001 in New Orleans are in their final stages (the celebrations have already started, and Mardi Gras is February 27). But there's still time to put together your own Mardi Gras-themed event--or put some New Orleans-style sparkle in an event any time of the year. The history of Mardi Gras is rife with different theories of when and where it actually started, but New Orleans is clearly the capital of the celebrations today. Mardi Gras is always on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. But the festivities, with all of their traditions and props, start weeks before that--masked balls with elaborate costumes, and bawdy street festivals with revelers tossing beads and doubloons (aluminum coins).
