No matter what anyone else may say about our slightly-less-booming economy, leaders in the special events industry are retaining their positive outlooks. In a survey of 150 industry leaders invited to a special luncheon at the Special Event 2001 conference sponsored by Special Event magazine in New Orleans last month, 35 percent of respondents said their revenue would increase by 20 percent or more in 2001. Another 20 percent said their revenue would go up by 15 percent, and another 20 percent expected a 10-percent increase. But despite their enthusiasm, the leaders are realistic: 42 percent named an uncertain economy as the greatest challenge facing their business in 2001 and beyond.
So how will special events companies respond to changes in the market? When asked about the industry's greatest strength going into 2001, 55 percent named the growing acceptance of special events as important social and corporate tools--an important trend we identified in our special report on 2001 event trends.
