Caribana, North America's largest Caribbean festival, is reintroducing a fund-raising gala to its lineup after almost 10 years without the event. Joe Halstead, chair of the festival management committee, said when the focus of the festival shifted onto the parade, the gala was taken out. This year, the gala will honour pioneers of Caribana at the Liberty Grand on July 25. "It was quite a popular event, so we're bringing it back," Halstead said. "It's going to be a high-level event, obviously with a Caribbean theme."
The festival, which got a $300,000 funding boost from the province yesterday, is also being renamed Scotiabank Caribana this year after receiving its first title sponsorship last month. The two-week festival runs July 15 through August 3, with the annual parade taking place August 2.
