When planning your d?cor, don't forget the Mardi Gras carnival colors: purple for justice, green for faith and gold for power. The official colors of the Romanoff household, they were adopted in 1872 when the Russian Grand Duke Alexis Romanoff came to New Orleans at carnival time.
The French began having private masked balls in New Orleans in 1718. Parties and street dancing were temporarily banned when the Spanish government took over in 1763, but the right to celebrate in masks was restored in 1827 after Louisiana became part of the United States in 1803.
