In a calculated move away from the standard cocktail reception-silent auction-dinner-dancing format so many fund-raisers follow, two Chicago charities will host benefit concerts tonight.
At the House of Blues, Platform One Entertainment, a local cause-oriented marketing company, booked hip-hop stalwarts Cypress Hill to perform on behalf of the Chicago Alliance to End Homelessness, a youth-oriented nonprofit dedicated to creating, supporting, and sustaining effective strategies to eradicate homelessness in the area. The concert event, entitled "Dare to Dream," also incorporates a silent auction and names DeVry University as a presenting sponsor. Tickets are $45 per person, $100 V.I.P. tickets give guests access to the House of Blues private Foundation Room before, during, and after the show. The first Dare to Dream concert took place at the House of Blues in January and starred rapper Common, who hails from Chicago, and benefited the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship and the musician's own Common Ground Foundation, which helps urban youth.Across town in the West Loop, the Associate Board of Gilda's Club Chicago, a support community for cancer patients named after late comedienne Gilda Radner, hosts Gildapalooza at Stanley's Kitchen & Tap on Racine Street tonight. Three local bands—Stolie, Victoria Fox, and Revolution—will take to the outdoor stage set up in Stanley's parking lot throughout the night. (Doors open at 6:30 p.m.) Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door, with all proceeds benefiting Gilda's Club Chicago. Sponsors include Partida Tequila and Miller Beer, and there is an open bar from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (and a cash bar afterward).
