1. CHICAGO HOSTS FIRST IDEAS WEEK: From Chicago bureau chief Jenny Berg: Chicago Ideas Week kicked off Monday and wraps up on Sunday. Intended to create what organizers describe as "an ecosystem of innovation, exploration, and intellectual recreation," the event will feature 100 speakers and "thinkers," including Bill Clinton, Rahm Emanuel, Michael Bloomberg, and Thomas Friedman, appearing at venues throughout the city. In addition to presentations on topics such as education and health, guests can opt to participate in "labs" that provide a behind-the-scenes look at how local businesses and institutions (Millennium Park and Boeing among them) are run. Also coinciding with the week: TEDxMidwest, running Thursday and Friday at the Oriental Theatre.

4. TRAVELERS CHOOSING LUXURY HOTELS: Although high-end properties were hit hard by the recession, business travelers are again staying at hotel brands like Ritz-Carlton. USA Today: "Occupancy rates have rebounded. In the first eight months of this year, it was 70.7 percent — a big increase from 62.4 percent in the same months in 2009 and identical to the first eight months of 2008."

CHICAGO: The Fairmont Chicago's executive pastry chef Erin Brew is now in charge of pastries for banquets and the hotel's three eateries.

Wildberry Pancakes and Cafe celebrated its grand opening Monday. The downtown breakfast and lunch spot takes weekday reservations for six or more guests. Menu items include fig and walnut multigrain pancakes with California figs and a rustic farm egg panini.

Police and organizers of the National Business Aviation Association trade show led a parade of small planes on the streets from McCarran Airport to the Las Vegas Convention Center Thursday. The aircraft were part of the more than 100 on display at the show, which began Monday. The convention center and the Henderson Executive Airport are splitting hosting duties for the three-day event for about 25,000 attendees.
