Trump Trades Over-the-Top Trappings for Sleek Lines

Wendy Wollenberg
April 3, 2008
The Trump International Hotel & Tower, which has been opening in phases since January, is a hot topic of discussion of late. From inevitable delays to the building's hulking presence, the Trump name just seems to drum up drama. One thing is for sure: The building has little in common with other Trump properties. You won't find any ornate gold fixtures or ostentatious trappings. The Donald's daughter (and Apprentice sidekick), Ivanka, is responsible for many of the design elements in the property, and her more understated style shows through.

The Trump Hotel Chicago has 339 guest rooms, including 600-square-foot rooms, 1,000-square-foot suites, and spa rooms that adjoin the Spa at Trump. Located on floors 14 through 27 of the 92-floor property (condominiums take up the top floors), the hotel rooms feature skyline views through 10-foot windows, fully equipped kitchens, and workspaces. Suites offer dining rooms and optional private chef services. The property's restaurant, Sixteen, and lounge, Rebar, are the city's newest spots for business entertaining. Sixteen, appropriately located on the 16th floor, overlooks the lake, river, and skyline and offers a face-to-face view of the Wrigley Building's clock tower. The restaurant comprises an intimate lounge, the main dining room, and two smaller private spaces (the 25-seat River Room and the 50-seat Bridges Room). The modern American menu is updated daily by chef Frank Brunacci and pastry chef Hichem Lahreche.

Rebar is a sleek lounge on the hotel's mezzanine. Perched over the Chicago River with a view of the Michigan Avenue bridge, the space also offers a plush V.I.P. area that seats 25.

On the 14th floor is the hotel's fancy 23,000-square-foot spa and health club. Featuring 11 treatment rooms, a couples suite, a steam room, and Swiss showers, the spa also offers private event space for 25. The adjacent health club includes cardio and weights equipment, a 75-foot heated pool, and a yoga and Pilates studio.

In terms of meeting space, several options are available. Two boardrooms can host 12 people each, while five salons can accommodate between 25 and 115 guests, depending on the type of event. Also on site is the Skyline Room, which holds 175 and has 12-foot windows with views of Chicago’s Gold Coast neighborhood, and the grand ballroom, which holds 300 and features 24-foot windows facing downtown.

Correction: This story has been updated to correct the length of the health club's pool.
