November 14, 2018: Dick Clark Productions and YouTube Music Extend New Year's Rockin' Eve Partnership, Oscars Board President Says Popular Film Award Still a Possibility, Premier League Appoints Susanna Dinnage Chief Executive

1. DICK CLARK PRODUCTIONS AND YOUTUBE MUSIC EXTEND NEW YEAR'S ROCKIN' EVE PARTNERSHIP: Dick Clark Productions (DCP) and YouTube Music have extended their partnership on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest. Deadline: “The deal will make YouTube Music the first presenting partner in the long-running show’s history. It extends the existing multi-year deal between DCP and YouTube Music covering the American Music Awards and with YouTube on the Streamy Awards. The 47th edition of the annual ball under the ball in New York’s Times Square will go on the air live on Monday, December 31, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. In the coming weeks, the lineup of performers will be announced for the five-and-a-half-hour show, which has posted ratings gains of late. Last year’s telecast, headlined by Mariah Carey, posted a double-digit gain over the prior year’s show and dominated all other programming on the holiday night. In co-ordination with YouTube’s involvement as a sponsor, the show will feature retrospectives of the most viral YouTube moments and music trends of 2018 as well as appearances by YouTube creators.” https://bit.ly/2RRsmvB

2. OSCARS BOARD PRESIDENT SAYS POPULAR FILM AWARD STILL A POSSIBILITY: Earlier this year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences introduced and then retracted the plan for a new category recognizing popular films. Now, Academy president John Bailey says the category is still a possibility. He discussed this and other telecast issues at an event at the EnergaCamerimage Film Festival in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Variety: "When the Academy announced the possibility of the popular film award last summer, it drew a backlash so fierce that the organization suspended the plan. And yet, said Bailey, having some kind of additional recognition for 'for best picture or best general release is very much on our minds.' The idea, he affirmed, came about in direct response to the Oscars’ falling TV ratings. Bailey pointed out that the first Academy Awards in 1929 handed out two best picture awards, one for a box office hit (William Wellman’s war epic Wings) and one for a film considered an artistic achievement (F.W. Murnau’s romantic drama Sunrise). Having two such awards again 'seemed like a good idea, the board approved it, announced it, but we got a lot of pushback,' Bailey said. 'So the board reconsidered and tabled it—which is not to say that the idea is dead. Even after a stake was driven through its heart, there’s still interest.' ... Asked about the possibility of adding new award categories, including ones for stunt performers, virtual reality, and casting, Bailey noted that 'a number of different crafts would like to be represented and there are ongoing discussions about creating new branches, but right now we’re trying to reduce the size of the board. However, nothing is written in stone.'" https://bit.ly/2K0QwB8

3. PREMIER LEAGUE APPOINTS SUSANNA DINNAGE CHIEF EXECUTIVE: Susanna Dinnage, former senior executive at Discovery Communications, was appointed chief executive of Premier League on Tuesday. The new position will make Dinnage one of the most important women in professional sports. The New York Times: "Dinnage will replace the Premier League’s departing executive chairman, Richard Scudamore, who is stepping down by the end of the year after nearly two decades leading the organization. Scudamore’s job will be split in two in a new structure, the league said, with Dinnage as chief executive alongside a non-executive chairman. With Scudamore at the helm, the Premier League grew into a sporting goliath. It is by far the most popular domestic league in world soccer, generating global television rights income worth more than 3 billion pounds each season. The team of five people appointed by the league to hire Scudamore’s replacement had managed to keep their preference for Dinnage a secret until Tuesday, when they convened a special meeting of the league’s 20 teams to announce her as their preference. Dinnage, whose broad experience in broadcasting and digital media appealed to the Premier League’s search team, joins an industry where women in leadership positions continue to be the exception rather than the rule. ... The Premier League has prospered since its inception in the early 1990s on the strength of record-breaking television contracts, and as the beneficiary of bidding competitions in which cable and satellite providers around the world repeatedly drove up the price to acquire the rights to broadcast its matches. Dinnage arrives at the Premier League amid a time of great change, however; with media consumption habits changing, she will be charged with figuring out a strategy to keep the money flowing as consumption of Premier League matches—in Britain, but also in places as far afield as Bangkok and Boston—increasingly shifts to online platforms." https://nyti.ms/2TdVkra
