March 20, 2017: Philadelphia Cinco de Mayo Celebration Canceled Over Immigration Crackdown Fears, Coachella Sues Urban Outfitters for Trademark Infringement, Palm Beach Wants Trump to Pay for Frequent Mar-a-Lago Visits

1. PHILADELPHIA CINCO DE MAYO CELEBRATION CANCELED OVER IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWN FEARS: Philadelphia's largest Cinco de Mayo celebration, El Carnaval de Puebla, has been canceled over immigration crackdown concerns and deportation fears. NBC 10: "The annual parade through South Philadelphia has taken place in late April or early May for the last decade and is the city’s largest Cinco de Mayo celebration. Organizer Edgar Ramirez said as many as 15,000 gather from as far as New England and Chicago. The decision to cancel El Carnaval, Ramirez said in an interview Friday, was 'sad but responsible' in light of the immigration crackdown by federal authorities. He said the entire Mexican-American community, both those here legally and those undocumented, are disheartened by reports of large-scale arrests and detainments by officers with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This week, ICE announced that 248 people in Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia are now in federal custody awaiting deportation after a two-week sweep. 'The group of six organizers decided to cancel unanimously,' Ramirez said. 'Everyone is offended by the actions of ICE. They did not feel comfortable holding the event.' The fear of federal immigration officers targeting the well-known celebration would have cast a dark cloud over what is among the most colorful and joyful on Philadelphia’s Latin American calendar, he said. Carnaval celebrates the May 5, 1862, Battle of Puebla, at which Mexican forces defeated French invaders. Some 450 carnavaleros, or marchers, take part in the parade. Some of the carnavaleros made history on New Year’s Day 2016 when they marched in the city’s well-known Mummers Parade. Carnaval itself has often taken place on Ninth Street between Wolf Street and Washington Avenue, though it spills onto many of the side streets." http://bit.ly/2nJt3c2

2. COACHELLA SUES URBAN OUTFITTERS FOR TRADEMARK INFRINGEMENT: Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is suing Urban Outfitters for using festival trademarks on its Free People products. Women's Wear Daily: "The annual California music festival told a federal court late Tuesday that Urban Outfitters Inc. through its affiliate Free People is improperly using a number of “famous” and long-registered Coachella trademarks to sell a number of products incorporating the Coachella name. The products at issue include Free People’s 'Coachella Boot,' 'Coachella Mini Dress,' 'Coachella Pocket Tank' and 'Coachella Valley Tunic.' The Coachella Valley Tunic being sold on Free People’s website was pointed out by Coachella as an item infringing on the music festival’s brand. Although Coachella has its own range of branded goods and services, including apparel, Urban is allegedly 'trading on the goodwill and fame' of the Coachella marks with the 'Coachella' branded apparel and its use of Coachella as a keyword trigger in online advertising, as well as in display URLs. 'As a result, a Google search for ‘Coachella clothing’ results in an advertisement for Defendants’ infringing goods,' Coachella said in its complaint. Urban’s use of the marks is allegedly part of an effort to 'misdirect consumers' searching for Coachella and its branded products to Urban and Free People and its 'unauthorized apparel.' Coachella also has a license agreement with H&M, allowing the fast fashion retailer market a related line of jewelry and apparel, as well as Pandora AS, also for a line of jewelry, leaving Urban’s allegedly infringing products to directly compete with legally sponsored goods." http://bit.ly/2n6j0jK

3. PALM BEACH WANTS TRUMP TO PAY FOR FREQUENT MAR-A-LAGO VISITS: Local officials in Palm Beach, Florida, want either the federal government or President Donald Trump to pay for his frequent visits to his private Mar-a-Lago club, which is costing millions in overtime costs for the county. CNN: "Protecting Trump while he is at Mar-a-Lago, his private club in Palm Beach, primarily falls on the Secret Service. But when the President visits Florida, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is asked to assist in a variety of public and private ways. With Trump making his fifth trip as president to what he calls the 'Winter White House,' the costs are rising. According to estimates provided to CNN by the sheriff's department, it costs about $60,000 in overtime every day Trump spends in Florida. Trump has spent, before this weekend, 14 days in Florida since taking office in January, meaning costs to the sheriff's department will likely top $1 million during this weekend's visit. Though the number is minimal when considering how much it costs the Secret Service to protect Trump, it is a sizable—and unbudgeted—amount for the county. Local officials, who are starting to grapple with the idea that they might foot the bill, say if the county has to pay for it, it will mean either tax hikes or cuts to services in the coming years. 'It means the local taxpayers will have to bear the added burden of being part of the security for the president of the United States,' Paulette Burdick, the Democratic mayor of Palm Beach County, told CNN Friday. 'It will either be cuts or increase in taxes.' The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment." http://cnn.it/2nBknVc
