Alexandra Sliva

TITLE: Artistic director, founder, and dancer of New Century Dance Company, Miami

IN THE BEGINNING: Sliva, 35, began her own dance company in 1995 with her dance partner, Ruddy Sanchez. The company of six has grown to include a multiethnic troupe of 30 professionally trained dancers that performs at national and international events.

KNOWN FOR: Each of the dancers is trained in all forms of dance, from hip-hop, Latin, and ballet to modern jazz and tap. New Century is also a production company. Sliva and her team create the music, choreography, scenery, stage sets, and costumes.

MOST SIGNIFICANT EVENT SO FAR: The company was asked to perform at a private gala in London before Andrew Lloyd Weber.

WHAT TO WATCH: The company wants to expand its range of entertainment to make it the centerpiece of an event. "Instead of 'thinking outside the box,' we think the box will always be a box. We're working on morphing that box into something different for any event through innovative dance routines," she says.

HOT TREND: Sliva notes that clients want more of a theatrical production instead of having dancers appear for a quick number or two throughout the night. "They want something to remember," she says, "and we try to get the audience to feel the performance because everyone might not recollect every costume or song, but they'll remember how they felt."
