It didn't take a lot of convincing to get the 350 Monterey Boats sales reps hyped about the 70's and 80's groove at their annual sales awards party. They arrived at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort & Golf Club dressed in their best disco duds and new wave accessories. Once inside, they were transported to a complete retro environment designed and managed by Cheers Events Inc.
Cheers designer Ronnie Lee used mirrored disco balls and neon lighting by Bay Stage Lighting Systems to create an ambience that combined Saturday Night Fever with the early days of MTV. Bay Stage enhanced the environment with black lights and wildfire lighting projected onto walls.
ConceptBAIT suspended spandex screens above the dance floor. Chairs and tabletops were also wrapped with colored spandex covers. The funky discotheque atmosphere was detailed with Cheers' centerpieces, made of glass fishbowls half filled with water and decorated with multicolored Litecubes that flashed neon green, orange, and yellow. Fabric-wrapped light columns dressed the room with bright hues.
The decor set the mood for DJ Grant Hemond's barrage of disco and new wave hits. Above the dance floor, Cheers provided a video screen that showed a stream of 80's music videos—featuring the likes of Pat Benatar, A Flock of Seagulls, and Madonna. Cheers provided party favors and accessories like punk sunglasses and jelly bracelets.
The Renaissance Vinoy catered, with cheese tortellini and fettuccini in Alfredo or marinara sauce, grilled salmon in hoisin sauce, and chicken breast in key lime butter. Cheers' greeters and dancers kept the crowd grooving, but judging from the writhing throng, the hired dancers' task wasn't too hard.
