Both a decor and culinary centerpiece, imported dome-shaped pizza ovens are popping-up across the capital. The latest landed a stone’s throw from the C&O Canal in Georgetown, at Il Canale, a 95-seat Italian pizzeria that opened February 5.
Owned by Sicily native Giuseppe “Joe” Farruggio and designed by Washington-based Barbara Hawthorn Interiors, the 1,200-square-foot bilevel venue is modern in design and has the look of an art gallery.
In addition to the oven, the main dining room has an open kitchen, an eight-seat bar, and a textured stainless steel staircase that leads to the 50-seat private dining level and 40-seat terrace. Dark gray woven vinyl floors, reflective silver walls, dark wood furnishings, and impressionistic art photographs fill the space.
In addition to thin-crust pizza, the menu includes pastas, risottos, steaks, and seafood.
Il Canale is available for full buyout.
