Romney's strategists envisioned 'America's living room' as the design for the convention stage inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum. 'We used the same wood tones to frame the screens, but they are layered so they are a mosaic of shapes. Above the whole thing are these skylights made out of screens as well. So in a sense it has a domestic architecture to it. It has a ceiling and walls and the things that are more typical of a living room architecture,' said Fenhagen.

'You have to get the stage up to a certain height so people can see. In this case, that turned out to be six feet high, but in order not to have six-foot walls, we put a lot of stairs around it. So it feels like you can just walk down into the crowd,' Fenhagen said.

'I did a lot of thinking about how a live event can look good on TV. I’m trying to make sure the close-ups are going to work. That’s what the millions of people watching TV are going to see, mostly close-ups. The depth of the set is the most behind the center speaker, so it really falls off and makes a nice soft picture behind the speaker. At the same time, there’s a lot of really important people that are there in person, and it needs to look great for them. And the whole energy of the event is part of the live experience. So the design needs to entertain those people as well,” said Fenhagen.

Fenhagen researched Frank Lloyd Wright for inspiration on how to use various wood tones to create a warm atmosphere. 'We made the stage as small as we could for what we needed to do. And to make it more intimate we used inlaid wood, so there is light wood in the center and then a dark border around it and then a medium tone around that so it makes it visually feel smaller,' he said.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Governors Ball
After abandoning its seated dinner format last year, the ball, produced and designed once again by Cheryl Cecchetto of Sequoia Productions, stuck with a sampling of more than 50 passed bites and plates from Wolfgang Puck and chef Matt Bencivenga, including a greater emphasis on meatless dishes. Academy governor Jeffrey Kurland returned to chair the ball.

Mark Held of Mark's Garden matched the overall aubergine color scheme using orchids, artichokes, calla lilies, kale, and fern shoots as part of the floral decor. And flowers appeared to grow out of the pedestals of glass-topped cocktail tables.

Vanity Fair returned to the scene with its party at the Sunset Tower Hotel. The event included a green and white arrivals carpet, a live feed from which was carried on one of the hotels' walls; screens showing the feed served as panes making up an imitation bay window. Cameras shot guests from behind so that the view from the window included the mob of photographers recording each guest's appearance.

'Architectural Digest' Oscars Greenroom
'Architectural Digest' Oscars Greenroom
Interior designer Madeline Stuart created the signature Architectural Digest greenroom at the Academy Awards. (It's the 11th consecutive year the mag has produced the backstage lounge for presenters and honorees.) Art director and production designer Cedric Gibbons, who is credited with designing the Oscar statuette, was the inspiration behind the room. Stuart's design evoked Gibbons's luxe and tailored modern style.

"When Myrna Loy and William Powell drink martinis in The Thin Man, they do so against the elegant backdrops Cedric Gibbons created. His work defines Hollywood glamour," Stuart said in a statement. "My design for the Architectural Digest green room pays homage to his four decades of film designs. My goal was to design a space where contemporary stars wouldn't be surprised to bump into Cary Grant or Katharine Hepburn."

'Essence' Black Women in Hollywood Pre-Oscar Luncheon
For Essence's sixth annual pre-Oscar award luncheon, Candace Purdie Montgomery worked with Caravents to drape the Beverly Hills Hotel in a rich palette of gold, black, and slate blue, reflected in the ballroom, lounge, custom linens, screen graphics, and lighting effects. A recurring motif of ornate gold frames decked the space, from the press wall to sponsor integrations in the lounge to the stage set. For the first time, the table configuration included a mix of round and rectangular tables, making the room feel larger.

Large-scale, 25- by 12-foot screens (more than double the size of screens in years past) flanked the stage, a look, with the use of edge blended projectors, that was designed to "immerse guests in classic, iconic imagery," according to Caravents' Cara Kleinhaut. The displays rotated images of the honorees with specialized graphics, sponsor logos, and Imag video from five cameras within the room.

Honoree Oprah Winfrey, with students from her leadership academy, drew a frenzy on the arrivals carpet and brought the house down on stage. But did her presence attract additional sponsor dollars? Not especially, said Purdie Montgomery: "We are 70 percent confirmed before we even share our honorees. Additionally, most of them are returning partners of two years or more."

USA Network's public-service campaign "Characters Unite" is aimed at putting an end to hate and discrimination. Earlier this month, the network launched a national bus tour called "I Won't Stand For." Stopping in cities such as Nashville, Atlanta, and Cleveland, the activation lets visitors personalize the "I Won't Stand For" tag line by adding in a word or phrase that resonates with them; choices include "sexism," "religious intolerance," and "homophobia." Guests can have their pictures taken with their custom statement and then share the images on Instagram using the hashtag #IWontStandFor. The photos also become part of the network's online photo gallery.

Last year, Toyota launched the #ToyotaGiving campaign. The initiative, which company reps describe as a "campaign that harnesses the power of the public via Instagram at events across the country," raises funds for community and nonprofit organizations. The campaign stopped at Lollapalooza in Chicago in August, and invited guests to write a statement on a blackboard that described their individual commitments to bettering themselves and their communities. Guests then posted photos of those statements to Instagram and Twitter using the #ToyotaGiving hashtag. For every tagged tweet or Instagram post, Toyota donated $2 to a nonprofit partner. In total, the campaign generated 4,000 Twitter and Instagram impressions, and proceeds went to 11 different organizations.

In November, Tiffany & Company hosted an in-store party in New York to celebrate the launch of its Tumblr page. At the event, live feeds from the brand's Instagram and Twitter feeds were projected onto the walls via Postano. Launched in 2011, Postano is a social media visualization tool that's designed to help brands leverage social and digital marketing content to build branded communities. Through Postano, brands can aggregate multiple social media feeds and then style the content to match the brand's presentation standards. The platform then lays the result out in a completely customizable format and automatically syndicates it across Web sites, Facebook tabs and apps, and more. It is also one of the only tools that aggregates social content for brands across all of their owned channels, including Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest, and more. A live Postano feed allows clients to easily pull in content whether by selected accounts or hashtags, monitor the content, and then have it instantaneously displayed.
