The fourth annual Rise Lantern Festival took on added meaning this year in the wake of the October 1 shooting at the Route 91 Harvest. The event, which was held October 6 and 7 in the Mojave Desert in Nevada, originally was created to celebrate the hopes, dreams, and wishes of participants—but this year it took time to honor those who were killed or injured during the massacre.
As is the norm at the event, thousands of lanterns were released simultaneously, an effort that appeared to light up the sky, and which this year served as a floating vigil. Organizers and attendees alike expressed condolences to the loved ones of the 59 people killed and the more than 500 shot. Still others, including those who were unable to get to the event, leaned on the wishes and prayers communicated in the “Still I Rise” social media campaign launched by event organizers earlier this year.
Live music was provided by a half dozen bands, while snacks were served in the four newly added lounges. The first release was done at sunset, then a second one was conducted, and the evening concluded with fireworks.
Organizers Dan Hill, founder, and Jeff Gehring, president, already have plans in store for next year’s version of Rise. The event will include the Rise Spa and Resort, a new offering that will include a camping experience, meals, possible excursions, and other services.
