Remembering Queen Elizabeth II

The Royal Family announced that Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at her estate in Scotland the afternoon of Sept. 8, 2022.

Following a 70-year reign, Queen Elizabeth II passed away at the age of 96 on Sept. 8, 2022.

The monarch’s health deteriorated rapidly while she was at her estate in the Scottish Highlands, an announcement from Buckingham Palace read on Sept. 8. Prince Charles—Queen Elizabeth’s eldest son and the heir to the throne—and his wife, Camilla, rushed to the Queen’s side that day.

Her Majesty “died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” the Royal Family announced on Twitter, and the “London Bridge” plan, an outline of what’s to happen each moment over the following 10 days, has commenced. As Politico revealed in 2021, flags will be lowered to half-staff within minutes of the announcement of the Queen’s passing, the royal family’s website will change to a black landing page, and the U.K.’s government website will post a black banner.

Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral is set to take place 10 days after her death.

Born in 1926, Elizabeth assumed the role of Queen at age 25, following the death of her father, King George VI. Her coronation took place on June 2, 1953, and was the first to be broadcast on television.

Throughout her reign, the Queen welcomed eight grandchildren, prevailed gracefully through the 1992 fire that swallowed the Windsor Castle, and became the first British monarch to visit the Republic of Ireland.

And to commemorate all the other moments during Queen Elizabeth II’s rule, as well as to honor Her Majesty’s 70-year reign, the U.K. and beyond celebrated a Platinum Jubilee earlier this year.

In remembrance of Queen Elizabeth II and her historic rule, BizBash takes a look back at five of its most royal moments throughout the years...

On Feb. 6, 2022, Her Majesty The Queen became the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service. However, celebrations didn’t ensue until June 2, which kicked off a four-day bank holiday across the U.K. to celebrate the extraordinary milestone. The Biltmore Mayfair in London’s prestigious Governor Square hosted Corgi Afternoon Tea to celebrate in a nod to the Queen’s two beloved Pembroke Welsh Corgis—Muick and Sandy—as well as her dorgi Candy. Dog lovers and corgi owners alike (with their pups in tow, of course) were welcomed to the hotel’s on-site restaurant and terrace Cafe Biltmore for a Jubilee-themed tea service. Naturally, pup-safe cookies and cupcakes were on the menu. See more: A Celebration Fit for a Queen: How the UK and Beyond Celebrated the Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Platinum Jubilee celebrations took place near and far. Take Casa Loma in Toronto, for example, which held a beacon lighting ceremony as part of its event, dubbed The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons. The beacon boasted “1952,” the year Queen Elizabeth II took the throne, and was lit by the Honourable Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. It was one of more than 2,022 beacons lit by communities, charities, and faith groups around the world—including the Principal Beacon, which was lit at Buckingham Palace during a ceremony on June 2.
